Hello all,
I am seriously considering getting a digital camera, and I want something that is not too expensive, in the 2.0 megapixel range. Any of you with digital camera's have any suggestions? The Kodak DC280, DC240, and Olympus D360L are top on my list so far. Thanks!
-Drew

I've had great success with the DC280. It's only $399 when you go to zdnet, which is significantly cheaper than it is in retail stores $699 I believe when I bought my camera last spring. Don't know if pricing is the same now or not.
The camera won some awards, and value for the money was very good.

I have had an Olympus D-340L for a couple years. Also had a fancy shmancy Kodak something with zoom and also a Sony Mavica that did Mpegs with sound.
The Olympus is the only one I kept. It is simple and it rocks! Get whatever the latest version is - I have not found the need for zoom BTW.

Drew -
I've owned a DC260 now for three years (maybe four, it JUST came out when we got it). I love the camera's pictures...it really takes some of the best. The only problem is the boot-up time (~15 seconds) and time between hi-rez shots. Oh, and it eats batteries like you wouldn't believe.
Now the new DC4800 has come down to $499, which is a steal. 3.3 mpix, lots of bells and whistles in a small package. You really can't go wrong with a high-end Kodak IMHO. Their picture quality is second to none in their respective price ranges.
- Darell

I picked up a Nikon Coolpix 950 a few months ago and have been thrilled with it. Ended up being aout $550 after the $150 mail-in rebate. This model has a lot of higher-end manual features that come in handy if you're a serious photographer. Here's a shot I took a few weeks ago of my car (hey, I know it's not a Volvo, but oh well )

I'm with 240 on the Nikon's.. picked up a 990 around Christmas time, and I'm very pleased with the results.
I use it for web design/development, so the cost was a little easier to justify. Had it been for consumer use, I would have picked up the Nikon Coolpix 880.
I've also heard good things about pretty much all the Olympus units.
Also, be sure to visit www.dpreview.com before making a decision. An excellent resource for reviews and tips.

Yes, the Nikon is very good.
I bought the Olympus D490 zoom (2.1 megapixels). It has a great lens, and is very handy. Also, it has the Qicktime movie feature where you can take short videos. That is very fun to do at parties, then email the video to people the next day.

It's not on your list, but I am thrilled with my Canon Powershot S20. I love its combination of compact size, performance and features.

Coastal,
Thanks for checking up on this subject! I still have not bought a digital camera as of yet. Sony just came out with their DSC-S75 CyberShot 3.34M and I have heard that most companies will soon be releasing cameras with the 5-megapixel CCD imager.
I think that I am going to spring for a 3.34-megapixel once the prices come down. Also, I wish that there was more of a standard in memory options instead of having so many different ones like compact flash, smartmedia, memory stick, and minidrive. I am sure there will be a lot of cool ones coming soon.
-Drew
