Diffrent front brake pads sizes for R's? (Dealer confusing me)

1071 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  tomedkaz
My dealer just called me saying that the noise I heard front the front were the front pads, which have some play on them. Apparently, there are two types of brake pads for Rs which can be used, and they need to be matched with the chasis number. According to my dealer, the pads that I currently have on are the "wrong ones" and that's why there' s a little play on the caliper. Does this make sense?

On a good note, I've had my ball joints, control arm bushings and rear bushings repalced under warranty

All the pads are made by Jurid and the same pad shape, FMSI 1001. There is no dimensional difference.

In regard to having the "wrong" pads, there was an attempt by Volvo to reduce squeal by adding an external damper. The shims previously used were to be omitted when these were in place. There was NO change in pad shape.

Yeah, when I did my brakes last summer, I ended up with the pads that were for "earlier" chassis numbers (even though the parts guy swore they were right). Have had zero problems, and since I did the brake job, there has been zero squeal!! Sounds like you have other issues, or just need new front pads anyway.

Tom what dealer did you go to? If you want we can meet over the weekend get the pads and I will do them for you. Screw the dealer unless they R doing it under warranty.

I went to Bay Ridge, and everything was covered under CPO warranty.
Thanks for your offer - I've done pads before so it's no big deal, I just wanted to see where the noise was coming from. But we should meet one day just to talk cars.

By the way, I'm so pissed. I got back home and my reverse lights STILL DO NOT WORK!!! They said it was the fuse, but obviously it was not! I told them it was the reverse light switch but they wouldn't listen. I should have checked when I picked up the car....argh.....

If that is the case and you just want to buy a new switch let me know and I'll ask him if he would install it, but it doesn't sound that hard, lol!

Well he's not a dealer, so he doesn't do warranty work.

Yeah Tom we should definitely meet up some time , I hang out with the LI guys once in a while so maybe next GTG you can make it. perhaps a few of us will do Captree next Sunday!

I've been to Bay Ridge before those service guys are pure D!(k$ they don't go the extra mile , they don't know what they are doing and they just bottom line suck! I go to them for oil changes cause they are open till midnight and for crap I have no time or space to do. At least Manhattan Volvo goes a little further , even they are a ripoff though and dumb a$$e$ who don't know $hit! They diagnosed my ride all wrong last time
when it came to the 4C. Took it to Nick at Highbloom and he told me exactly what I needed! Anyway good luck and see you soon.

All R's use the same brembo calipers, FMSI D1001 in front and FMSI D592 in the rear. These are the same up front as are used in the Mitsu Evo V and later, and 1993 and later WRX STi (among many others). The rear brembos match those on the 1993+ STi. You can often get some better deals at non volvo-specific stores.

Oh man I'm so aggrevated with that service. Yesterday I realized that whoever worked on my car didnt put the seat covers on and now my Gobi interior is filthy! I tried cleaning it yesterday but not everything came off. The more I'll clean it, the more color I'll lose. This is definately the worst dealership in town.

I called them letting them know about it, and they asked me to come in so they can clean it with their "special products". I should just have them dye it, or heck - even replace it - and have them pay for it because it was really their fault. I keep my car super clean and this just killed me.
What do you guys think?
