I've noticed of late I'm having increasing difficulty moving the 6-speed gear stick into the reverse position. Today for example I tried maybe thre times in quick succession to move the stick from neutral to reverse when leaving the office parking lot. I just could not engage reverse at all.
I found that I had to release the clutch while in neutral one or two time before being able to get into reverse. Getting into reverse has always been a little troublesome but never this bad. Is this a sign of the times? Have others experienced this slow degrade in moving into reverse. My car has a little over 14,000 miles and is close to being 3 years old from new car purchase date.

I will also say that shifting into all gear positions except for 5th and 6th is quite notchy.

Comments welcomed, and thanks in advance.

Re: Difficulty moving stick to reverse gear position (barrysharp)

Time for the transmission fix, known problem
Remove the transmission, clean and regease the input shaft and reassemble. Worked for me and everyone else who had this fix
Warranty, of course. I can't remember the TNN, however I'm sure someone will chime in with it
You've also been here for 3 years and should remember this from last year.
Particularly effects 2004's

Thanks for the TNN. Have printed it off and will be armed with it when visiting Volvo service.

In the meantime, when it balks at going into reverse, slip it into first or second then go right back into reverse. works every time for me. oclv

Better yet, a taller gear like 3rd or 4th

I have to do this ALOT. Is it worth getting fixed? I would rather not have them go into my tranny if they don't have to...

Yes, no big deal. They do not go inside your tranny and the fix makes it MUCH better than new

its not a permanant fix though. 1 year after the fix, and its coming back.
I noted the other day how wonderful mine shifted (year and a half after the fix)

Its like the axle spline fix-- for some it works for good, others its just a bandaid untill the problem rears its ugly head again..
R engagement was perfect for a year after the fix then it started getting harder and harder to engage when cold...

just pointing out that its not a 100% fix... maybe i'm one of the unlucky ones, but it is possible...

I do this almost out of habbit, and it usually works the first time.

It is definitely worth getting fixed. When they did mine they found all sorts of other problems while they were in there which resulted in a new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and transmission. Mine now shifts closer to what I expect. As an added bonus, the work got rid of my wheel rub on tight turns.

That should be done with a any and all (manual) transmissions or at least put it in another gear, (3rd or 4th, reverse is a bit of overkill
), this stops the main shaft from spinning, this works for ALL manual transmissions and should be done out of habit.
Train yourself that this is something that you do automatically all the time
