As you guys know, i changed my 1.8 to a 2.4 auto s40.
Today my s40 went in to get a number of things fixed:-
1. wiper blades
2. LOTS of rattles in the back (sunblind maybe), roof and front
3. suspension or something around the wheels make noise on ramps. the 1.8 did do this too but only on cold mornigns then it was ok... this one always does it.
4. child lock fault
5. passenger door sometimes refuses to open!
6. brakes are weak...and sqeaky.
the thing is, today i got the 2.4 V70 again for a loan car. ive had it before but not at the same time of where i could compare it to a 2.4 s40!
As i drove to work i noticed a few things:-
1. how smooth the ride was and although the v70 has done about 8000 miles, it is a loan car so most people do mess around with it... and mines on 15000 now. my car didnt feel as smooth at 8000.
2. gear changes are abrubt on mine, is this because its gear tronic? the v70 is just auto and it has very smooth changes.
3. no rattles, or noies of ramps
4. the gear has the extra 3 options 1,2,3 or whatever it is under the D. Mine only has P,R,N,D.
5. it seems so much more powerful and considering theres that estate back to it which should be heavier, it feels a lot quicker and lighter
6. and lastly, its quieter too... i was doing 120mph today at around 4.5k revs i think and it was whispering down. the s40 does have a hell of a lot more road noise and engine noise.
are these anything to be worried about?
thanks

120mph? In London? Don't you mean 20mph
Interesting you find the S40 'noisy' - my V50 has no rattles at all (well except for the dog rolling around in the back when I go round a corner a bit to fast ) and it's only 'fault' (so far) was a noisy drivers seat - a change in direction produced a knocking noise - but that was cured when the dealer greased the seat rails.
I am thinking about upgrading to the 2.4 auto (current one is 1.8 SE) and the V50 I originally drove (as a hire car) was a 2.4 auto - it was very smooth, but it didn't have the Geartronic if I recall.
I am torn at the moment between the better MPG of the 1.8 and slightly lethargic response from "off the mark" situations, and the bigger engine but poorer MPG of the 2.4 auto.
A lot of the noise in my V50 when travelling at speed seems to be from the tyres more than anything else. Most road tests I have read on the S40/V50 all mention their quiet interiors. And it is pretty quiet - not up there with a Rolls but still better than a lot of cars I have driven.

Re: (BobV50)

I think my V70 rides much better, the V70 trans is smooth shifting, I don't have an auto in my S40, If I had to do this over again I would have looked into a S60 T5 or a V70 t5 instead of my S40, IMO the V70 is just a better car for not much more $$$$. I like the S40's size, but the V70 has more engineering put into it.

Bob.. you better not be a policeman but yes 120 I drive on the motorway a lot for work and as long as its the VOSA sitting in the hiding spots and not the police, i'm happy as long as its empty
I wonder if an estate and a saloon differ that much then... if oyur V50 has no rattles, nor does oldman and my loan v70 but my s40 does...
the upgrade from 1.8 to 2.4 was very good and really needed... especially with the amount of driving i do.
the >only< issue is what you mentioned, the MPG is DEF lower and its killing my bank!
I got around 28mpg on the 1.8 but i was pushing it on the motorway and it didnt like it.
the 2.4 i get is 24mpg on and off local, and 31 on a non stop motorway journey. having said that, the 2.4 has a 62 litre tank, 1.8 had 52 i think? yet i can barely hit 300 miles to a full tank, 1.8 for same journies gave me 340-360.
its heavier and an auto so i guess thats the issue.
Hope that clears up any queries you had for your potential upgrade

Re: (Akash)

Hmmm, maybe I don't need the extra expense right now - I get around 34mpg and I don't do the miles to warrant getting a diesel, and if fuel prices continue to rise, smaller and more frugal might be the way to go....
The comfort of the V50 is the clincher for me - the winter pack makes any distance driving a lot easier and the car cruises quite happily at 70ish (I have more than one licence to lose..)

Re: (Volvo_girl)

well keep the Volvo and buy a bike, I figure on my drive if I were to do it on a bike I'd be dead in a year tops..
