S70Rs in Europe were only made in '98 and only in FWD. As a manual they came equipped with the M59 5 spd. which is an M56 with a factory LSD. No AWD S70Rs available existed.

Another difference is that as a manual the FWD S70R came with 250 hp stock using a straight flanged 18T turbo. The AWD and FWD Manual V70R in '98 also used an 18T versus the Automatic which is 236hp and a 16T just like in North America.

I promise there were no 98 S70R AWDs that came out of the factory. I didn't even know someone had custom made one - that's fantastic.

If someone advertised having an S70 AWD it had to be a 99 or 00 with an LPT engine or someone who did something custom after the fact.

You can do it. The concept of making a FWD into an AWD on a gen 1 70 series has been done here in Sweden. I was previously unaware that someone had done it to a FWD S70R but that's a great platform to start with!

You have to buy the tabs for the undercarriage but Volvo sells them. Then of course the rear suspension is quite different so it would be helpful to have a donor car to get the whole swap.

Even making a 99+ S70 AWD into a manual and T5/R motor and 18T turbo would be a great car. Probably a bit faster than the equivalent wagons.

That said, building up an LPT motor is a great way to go as well. They are a lot of fun since you wait a bit less for them to boost. So an easier way would be to take a pre-existing LPT AWD S70 and manual swap it and then upgrade engine parts to accommodate a long list of performance mods.

There's also lots of value in working through a project, especially if you find the right car or already have the right car.

Just look at my own car and the project it has become. It started out as a '98 V70 AWD 190hp 13G turbo etc.
The first upgrade was an IPD stage 1 flash, exhaust and air filter.
Since then it has gotten an M58 manual AWD transmission, a rebuilt 15G turbo, a step up on injectors and a T5 M ECU which worked pretty well but wasn't optimized for the GLT engine. Still not satisfied, I added the S60R manifold and custom made software based off a T5 M map but optimized for the GLT engine from Sweden. I still have plans for a downpipe upgrade and possibly changing the 15G to an angled 16T (very slight power increase there). So you see how project creep goes...over a number of years.

If you want more power than that, you probably would have to put in 450cc injectors (the green ones), an 18T turbo, more custom software for that and all the supporting mods, and you'd likely want to upgrade to stronger rods.
