Hi,
Very new to the Volvo scene. I've done a great deal of research on the v70 R wagons, but what is a T5? Thanks in advance.

The V70R is the hi-perf AWD wagon. 236 hp, auto tranny, awd (obviously :p ). I believe some of the 2000 R's went to a 263 hp engine, with a bigger turbo and different tranny.
The T5 is the hi-perf. "regular" fwd version, with the same 236 hp. it comes in either manual tranny (like mine!!) or in automatic. The T5 by nature should be had in a manual tranny, as it's the most fun to drive in that form.
Happy Hunting!!
Tony

Tony
All three cars share the same powerplant...2.3 HPT In the 98-99 T5 this makes as you mentioned 236hp but in the R version I think the compression rate was different...at any rate the 98-99 R made 247hp
2000 T5 remained 236 hp while the R with bigger turbo and injectors made 261 hp conservatively rated and stock
All post 97 R's are auto and AWD. The R badging adds a lot of nice cosmetic touches and trim and also is LOADED with only a few options remaining (third seat, cargo cover, etc...) Even the Dolby 200 watter w/surround was standard R fare.
Both nice cars...
Jim

One...
the SC901 is 200 watts...the T5 gets 100 watts...I believe the C70 was also 200 Watts
I said I thought the compression ratio was different...for MY2000 compression ratio for both was 8.5:1
This I do know horsepower for the '99 R was up 11 to 247!!!!

Yannis must've been selling too many of those "best selling" XC's to good looking Soccer Moms and missed this well publicized upgrade for '99. Is the S60 ACTUALLY overtaken the lead from XC?
Jim
[This message has been edited by TravelingIncognito (edited 05-02-2002).]

That's how we all learn about everything; from researching/studying and from others. I know that's the way I have learned whatever little I know. There is nothing wrong with being corrected...
As far as "what is a T5R"? I know you are playing with it but since we are at it...it signifies that this car is not AWD and it is an...850!
S60 is selling at a faster pace than the Xcs. Actual numbers are still in favor of the XC since it came out first. But that is going to change real soon.
The BASE system for the C70 (HPT and LPT since MY2001) is rated at 200W. If you opt for the Dolby Premium Sound then it gets upgraded to 400W.
Yannis

For MY99, it was not all that much more powerful, then with the heavy AWD and only auto tranny....it wasn't the best choice for those who wants even MORE sporty outta this arse kicking wagon.
Don't know...maybe American don't like manual tranny?
Although with that said, there have been a few 850 T5-R's and R's that have made it here from Canada with manual transmissions. They are very rare. I have never seen any V70R in the U.S. with a manual transmission that somehow' made it here. Although, I have seen pictures of a Saffron S70R AWD manual here in the U.S.
If you really want a manual transmission, the best thing to do IMHO, is to find a nice S70 T5 SE and just do an ECU upgrade. It will get you past stock levels of 'R' horsepower and it has a nice wood/Alcantara leather interior as well as being loaded with all options at the time. I know Volvo made a V70 N/A SE but unfortunatly, I am not sure if the ever made a V70 T5 SE manual.
S70 T5 SE

-Drew

That batch appeared in the Southern and/or Western Regions. So, it is conceivable that someone could have custom ordered a manual transmission SE although I very much doubt it.
Yannis

Many of them, I would assume, at least kinda customized their options and other miscs items when they walked in the dealer and placed the order.
My C70 was not off the show room or their stock, I waited 3 months for the car. I think I was the first 3rd batch of the C70s coming to the States. I was lucky enough to not bought the 2nd batch(I think) of C70s which had the leakage at rear quarter panel window.
So..the point is, if these Rs were coming in as on order basis, I don't see why they did not offer this to the North America market.
Your reasoning is valid for the 40 series, though. Yet, you would think more younger crowd will be buying that car than 40~50 year old consumers.

So, Volvo decided not to "waste" millions of $$$ in certifying such car through the crash testing process.
Your reasoning is valid for the 40 series, though. If there is a model where Volvo really blew it as fas as not offering it with the manual transmission is in the x40 line-up. I can't tell you how many sales we have lost to A4s, Jettas and Passats due to the lack of manual transmission. For MY2000, the official excuse was that they "did not have time" which I can believe since they rushed to bring the car on time for that year. But what about MY2001 and MY2003?
BTW, the S/V40s have the unique distinction of being a model that is bought by the extremes in our demographics; either very young or pretty old people...(don't ask me what constitutes "pretty old" as I don't want to open another can of worms! ).
Yannis

I've got a S70 T5SE Manual, and it was very hard to find.
But I think you're 100% right when you say the demographic that are buying Volvo's don't want manuals. It just so happens that I don't fit into that demographic since I am quite a bit younger than the average Volvo driver.
(I have extensively researched this fact by using the scientificly proven method of staring into other cars to see how old the guy driving the other car is.)
Even here in Canada where there are many more manual cars they made the S/V40 in auto only... Very, very dissapointing. I'll be looking to replace my 83 242 Turbo in the next year or so with a small car and unless Volvo makes the 40's in manual I may have to buy something else for the first time in my life. I'll be breaking a 2 generation tradition in my family of exclusively owning Volvo's. I've been looking at Subaru's Impreza for the second car now... I hope they see the light (especially in Canada where I would venture to say that more people drive manuals than in the US) and bring the 40's over with a stick.
Jay
