So I began by trying to lay everything out as the 2b instruction diagram tells you to, but after fooling with it for nearly an hour, I decided to copy smeagol's install
(by taking all of the optic cables out of their housings and simply connecting them back together in a triangle (crown in this case) making sure that the optical flow (arrows) were all aligned).
Started by removing the plastic display from around the radio...

Removed the power supply and stock optic cable from the back of the display and removed the entire thing...
I then layed everything out on the ground to try to work out a logical wiring schematic of how things should work (arrows indicate flow of optics)...

I then plugged everything up in the car to make sure I had a valid power source (F#77 in the passenger fuse box was perfect).
I used a fuse tap and simply wired the hot end to it (then secured with electrical tape) and the ground end to a bolt on the frame of the car in the driver's footwell.

This is a picture of the accessory mounts and plugs (iPod, USB, and AUX In) that were fed through to the driver side from the GW unit on the passenger side...

Here's a picture of everything "mocked up," if you will...

Here are some pictures of everything installed (I have my sirius radio plugged into the Aux In). The iPod connector still hangs loose as I'm still trying to figure out what to do with it...

I found this quotation by smeagol in the 15 page Dension thread very helpful actually: Anyways, if you follow the 2b diagram, all you have to do is to create a "triangle" from your fibre optic strands. In the manual they say that one is joined to another with a joiner provided, but I just removed all the strands from the connectors and followed the light direction on the diagram to reassemble. basically you need 2 male and 1 female fibre optic connectors and 3 fibre optic strands. You remove the ICM (display unit) and unplug the fibre optic connector from the back (you do not need to access your CDC at all this time so no need to remove the centre console). Then take one of the male connectors from your "triangle" and shove it into the back of the ICM. Then take the female connector and mate it with the male one that was originally plugged into the ICM. Then take the other male connector and plug it into the Dension unit (left hand side with the connectors at the bottom and dension logo facing upwards).
This is a variant of the 2b install with DIP Switches 1, 4, and 6 on.

Re: Dension GW500 Install... HOW TO DIY (Revolve40)

Great writeup. That method of adding the optical cables is pretty neat since it allows even quicker installation and removal. It also provides with some extra flexibility where to put the GW.
The suggested by Dension method works fine too and you end up with two extra pieces of optical cable and some extra connectors but the cable is just about long enough to reach the installation location. I may experiment a bit with the opto cables later when my moving container arrives - my whole household is now on wheels somewhere in the US...

So this gateway allows Aux in / Ipod connection directly to the existing unit? (ie not thru a FM modulator)
Does it allow the steering wheel controls to control the ipod?
How about text display on the ICM?

It has to do with certain variants of the DIP switches as well as which "CD" is selected (when iPod is selected, the ICM shows all 6 CD slots as full--you then can switch between CD's five and six to switch between iPod wheel controls and stock controls on the radio in the car).

Re: (Revolve40)

Sounds great, now I will be getting one for my car, replacing the FM modulator that I fixed last week.

You'll be very pleased. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions during the install process.

I just finished installing the GW500, works great, just no title display on the ICM. A point to take note is that the wiring diagram given in the 2nd picture and the wiring diagram given in the box are opposite, meaning the flow of the light is actually counter-clockwise. I wired it counter-clockwise and it works (just for iPod currently, have not tested the other 2 connections yet).

Re: (fone)

The title display only fully works if you are in iPod UI mode. In iPod GW mode you are supposed to operate the iPod through its own keypad/display (but the head unit will still display some info). You also need to have the CD Text option enabled in the head unit menu.
How to operate the menu under Disc 6 requires some practice.

I think I will ask for one of these for X-mas. Where did you guys order the gateway from? The search isn't working and I saw on the website that the NA dealer is based in Canada.

Yes, mine works with the premium sound. Just that there are text display yet, even in ipod UI mode, will get to the dealer next month to check if CD text is enabled.

In albrecht's earlier post, he mentioned something about chassis #. Does that have anything to do with installing the gateway?
Although enfig's site says it work on XC90's, shouldn't they put down S40's as well? I just want to make sure that it'll work on my car as it is an '05 with premium sound and 6 cd changer.

The chassis # was though to have indicated whether or not it will work in our cars (we tried to notice a pattern) but I am pretty sure that chassis # has nothing to do with compatibility.

Quote, originally posted by hsuboy »

Although enfig's site says it work on XC90's, shouldn't they put down S40's as well? Also, the same unit has six individual DIP switches. For every different combination of switches turned on/off, there is a different car that the unit works for. For instance, with DIP switches 1,4, and 6 on, the unit works in our S40's. There is also another combination of switches that is for the XC90 that also works for our cars. There are other combinations that will work with a Porsche, Mercedes, etc. This eliminates the need for tons of different units to be produced. In this situation, Dension only has to create one unit and stuff different programs into it. Hope that helps/is correct.
