I posted earlier in late March that my 2006 R 6MT with 27k miles on it was making s windup noise upon ignition and then a steady noise that sounded like it was coming from behind the instrument panel. I had the oil (Mobil1) changed 2 months ago (approx 2k miles). When I checked the oil last week it was at least a quart low (which I added) . Since then there has been no noise (the weather has also gotten wetter and cooler).
Please note this car was crashed into in late February (right after I purchased it ) and was in the body shop (who subcontracted to Annapolis Volvo)until late Sept and then I had to put it back in in August due to some cosmetic repairs not being complete. The total charge was $31k to repair (I paid $26k for the purchase). So by October I was using my R on a daily basis and in December the "low-oil " light came on...I figured that someone at Annapolis Volvo must have put intoo little. Now I realize I must have a crash related oil leak that was not repaired (unless Rs burn an awful lot of oil).
Would the vehicle, if low on oil make a sound like the one I described?
I wish I knew more about the vehicle but to know things you have to give them time and that is something I have little of.

I would guess that my oil consumption is around 1/2 qt. per 7000 miles, if that helps.

Check the boot at the bulkhead that fits around the steering shaft. Those can come loose and you will hear engine compartment noises in the cabin, especially the turbo.
1qt low will not cause noises that I'm aware of.

Low Oil Warning light will also come on if your oil is dirty and you are due for an oil change.

Re: (lowenhart)

Mine burns almost 1qt between changes (5K), but the low oil level indicator is VERY sensitive on these cars. Mine comes on if it falls below half on the dipstick hashmarks.
I also have a noise coming from behind my gauge cluster (unrelated to oil level), but I just attribute it to this being a Volvo. Their never quiet.

Re: (T5 for Life)

Make sure our power stearing fluid is topped of and at the correct level. I had an odd whine about a year ago that cropped up randomly. I noticed I was low on power stearing fluid b/c of a slow leak in the line. went away when I topped it off. It also whined when cornering. All good once I added a bit to it.

Doesn't anyone think it odd that their cars are burning so much oil?
My 98 S70 never burned oil....it got dirty, yea but the stick never showed a loss of oil. In fact I have never had an oil that was disappeared.

Re:

I have wondered about the oil consumption too. My wifes '04 SR needs a quart every 3-5K, made me a little nervous at first, but I've heard it's not too uncommon. My '04 VR hasn't needed any yet, but I've only had it for 2k, so time will tell if it's as thirsty or not. I can say that her's seemed to use more the first time I switched to synthetic, would there be any reason for that?

Never burned a drop in either of my P2 R's, unless if you count about 1/2 quart in in total of about 45000 miles combined.
