Considered picking this up (Possibly going to need a second vehicle soon) on a limited budget. Would this be worth making maybe an $800 offer on? It has a lot of miles on it. Just want opinions

Is there any more info on it other than the ad? Are you able to take it out for a run, and crawl under it etc to assess it better? Can you do some work yourself when it needs it?
I'm not sure what the prices are like for second car beaters in the states but $1000.00 is alot of money no matter how you look at it.

I took it for a drive. It runs and rides fine, the ABS light would come in intermittently though and the brakes were a bit wobbly. I offered $850. I wouldn't buy it without having my mechanic look at it first. Any ideas on the cost for a brake job on one of these?

you could ask the mechanic that you take it to, but I'd guess in the $3-400 range (with new rotors, less if they just need to be turned). I just had all 4 rotors replaced, new pads all around, new parking brake shoes, and a front wheel bearing done for $600 total. Course, that was from a mechanic buddy as side work, and he gives me parts at cost (and he gets a mech discount). Charged me $330 for my Outback, which was all pads, turn rotors, air filter and oil change.

what does an abs light on the dash mean?

Could mean a failed ABS unit (they are supposedly a common failure point), but if it is intermittent than that seems less likely. Could just mean that your brakes are not functioning up to snuff (or unevenly) due to worn out pads, worn or warped rotor/s, some minor piece broken, etc. (maybe even a leak somewhere). There are also redesigned shims for the rear pads that address a vibration that occurs for some reason that feels like the anti-lock brakes are cycling. If it is the ABS module or sensors, then you're talking more $$. IPD sells the modules for around $300, and the sensors are around half that (each).
