I checked out previous postings on this subject - without success - so any thoughts?
I bought a V70R new in May 2005. A month or so later came out in the morning to find the battery nearly dead without enough juice to start the car. A quick jump start and all was well.
The same thing happened again last week.
The only thing in common in the incidents is that the key was left in the ignition - only done because we were out of town and out in the country - and someone may have needed to move the car...
Without question the key was turned to the off position - but had not been pulled out enough to allow the steering to lock. No lights or anything else was turned on.
It seems now that the only two times I've left the key in the ignition overnight resulted in a dead battery.
Does some part of the car turn on or stay on merely because the key is inserted? Is this some kind of security disabling feature? Is the car punishing me for leaving the key in overnight?

Re: Dead Battery? (BUFFALOBOB)

Bob:
I am not sure about the Volvos, but this is a KNOWN issue with later model Porsches (911's, Boxsters and Caymans). If you leave the key in the igntion, even with everything of, it WILL drain the battery. Perhaps the Volvo is the same way?
My friend keeps his car garaged in NYC and EVERY SINGLE 911 and Boxster in his lot and others has a sign in it (in English and Spanish) to not keep the key in the ignition. Apparently it drains the battery so much that you need to replace it, and Porsche will only give you one freebie.
Keep the key under the mat (or better yet out of the car with the car locked!)

Also Volvo
You cannot leave the key in the ignition as it MAY draw down.
Not always the case but this is very likely the cause

Re: Dead Battery? (JRL)

Thanks for the heads up. 'Seems like Volvo punishing me for not being safety conscious.
