D5 engine oil leak - advice

Hi there

I have recently purchased an XC70 2006 year, with the D5 2.4L 185BHP diesel turbo engine. It appears to run well, but I have a small oil leak from where the swirl pot arm is attached.

The arm keeps popping off, which I have read about and will try and solve.

However I can also see oil leaking from this area, is this a common problem? Do I just need a new gasket for this? I wonder if the seals on the swirl pot butterflies are gone.

Any advice welcome before I take it to bits.

There are no seals available, need to buy a new swirl-valve mechanism with a new arm. Take the injectors out, remove valvecover with gasket, remove old swirl-valve mechanism en install new one. Put valve cover back with new gasket, install injectors and fuel lines, bleed the fuel system and calibration/adaption of swirl-valve motor is required.

I've got the same leak on the same engine, though mine is a 06 V70.

The swirl Arm itself is notorious for coming off or breaking. The previous owner put on a modified one, which has never been an issue for me. Something to look in to.

While you're in there, it's worth giving the egr pipe and mixer a good clean. I was also going to clean out the injector seats etc.

In preparation to doing the job, I found this video which you may find helpful.

This is the state mine was in at 143,000 miles.
As above replace arm and the flap rod.
Not a clean job.
The car will probably run a lot better after you give it a good clean out.
Be careful to clean the injector seats very carefully, and use new seals.

Hi hope you don't mind me messaging you, Ive removed the cylinder head on my 2007 xc90 d5, I originally started the job to replace rockers and lifter, new swirl flaps too, I cleaned too much carbon out of ports which ended up jamming between valves and pistons stopping rotation by hand, so no I've removed head and I'm thinking of replacing a few inlet valves as some tips are damaged slightly with grooves from the rockers, I see from your pics you had wear marks on your valve tips but it's hard to tell how bad they were, did you change your valves? Should I change mine, thanks would only change the damaged ones View attachment 174862
