Cylinder head compatibility?

1116 Views 10 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  type44q
Hi. I've got a '95 960 with bent valves and I'm trying to determine what my options are re: replacing the cylinder head. I'm wondering if the 1992-94 cylinder heads and the 1995-98 heads don't interchange, can anyone confirm this?

What's really throwing me off is that there's a "93" in a circle stamped into the valve cover on my '95, making me wonder if the head or (more likely?) the engine isn't even the original.

All help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Swedespeed.

Scroll down on this...

...and note that the '92-'95 had the B6304F Inline 6 while the '96 and up had the B6304F2 with the differences noted here...

This is an $$$ fix no matter what direction you take - just the head or a rebuilt engine install.

Looking at the value of your 960 with bent valves and the value with all repairs made it seems more practical to source a used 960 in good shape.

Good luck.

Re: Cylinder head compatibility? (gdill2)

George, thanks for the info and the advice, I really appreciate it!

Under ordinary circumstances, I'd have junked the car at this point (the cost of the repair obviously exceeding the value of the car)... however, I'm doing the work with the help of a friend who owns an independent european car repair facility here in the OKC area and I have a line on some reasonably-priced heads with no bent valves. The Volvo tools are probably what are really going to get me; hopefully I can find somewhere that'll let me rent them.

I checked out that engine info you provided links to; I was unable to tell if a newer 96+ cylinder head is compatible with my 1995 engine. Adding to my confusion is the fact that Hollander (salvage yard interchange database) indicates that 92-94 and 95-98 (not 96 - 98) are separate interchanges. Wish I knew for certain which heads were compatible.

Re: Cylinder head compatibility? (type44q)

Well, just got off the phone with parts dept at the local Volvo dealer and they're confirming the same thing Hollander Interchange is saying: that 92 thru 94 are one cylinder head and 95 and up is another. But even if that's definitely accurate (and I've come across incorrect Audi dealership info all the time, at least on the older turbo 5cyl cars I've owned), it says nothing conclusive about compatibility.

To add further confusion, it turns out my valve cover has 93, 94 and 95 in little circles stamped into it.

Re: Cylinder head compatibility? (type44q)

Various online parts sites show the rebuilt short block the same for '92 through '97 including the gasket set for the cylinder head installation.

Look around on your engine/head for casting numbers and share any found plus your car's VIN.

On the top of the valve cover, it reads "1285"

1001537-2 (typo corrected) is cast into the underside of the valve cover.

1001536 P02 3 0 is cast into the passenger side of the cylinder head.

My VIN # is YV1KW9615S1025379.

Thank you!!

Yep, I know carfax; I've been using them since their beginning to check out the history of cars I was interested in buying.

Not sure how throwing money at them is going to help me find the cylinder head interchange info I need, though...

Re: Cylinder head compatibility? (type44q)

The VIN you provided shows a '95 960 wagon - now we need to get some numbers off the engine block to see if it is original.

Hmm, where on the block might I find those numbers?
