I went to my mechanic this morning for a routine oil change, and he told me my CV boot was going bad, it was leaking some grease. I asked him how this could happen, and he couldn't tell me. Also, he quoted me a price of $400 for replacing the two rubber pieces. I was wondering if any other 850 owner has had this problem.
Thanks
O ya, and I was told the 960's don't have them, because the 850 is a RACE car =)

Our new-to-us 1994 850t wagon had a split boot when we were looking at it and the seller had it fixed among other things. The boot, new front brakes, and a tightening of the steering column (at the tilt/telescope area) all told came to around what you got the quote for just boots (around 400-500).
FWIW, IPD sells complete axles for 850s for something like $275.00 and labor to change an axle should be minimal.
$400.00 for a boot job sounds very high to me.

Thanks msvphoto, I thought he was ripping me off.
I'll check with IPD for the price of the boots alone.
I just called Volvo, and they gave me a price of $410! It seems like I'm not having very much good luck.
Did they tell you this was urgent?

The boot kit from the dealer is 57 dollars and the labor isn't that bad I did it in about an hour but you will need to rent or buy an axle puller/pusher because the axles get rusted into the hubs. The kit comes with both boots, grease and clamps.

Good luck

Well, I still don't have those CV Boots replaced, and I think the problem got worse. Sometimes, when I turn the wheel while in motion, I hear a squeal or a whining type noise. I am hoping that this is not the bearings, because that wouldn't be the best thing. O well, hopefully one of you guys may know if this is caused by the cv boots or maybe something else.

That squealing noise you hear is the CV joint bearings beginning to fall apart.
CV joint boots are a MOT failure item in the UK because when they split they allow grit into and grease out of the bearing at the end of the driveshaft with expensive and potentially lethal consequences.
If you don't get it fixed for whatever money, you'll be spending a lot more very soon, or a long time in hospital when the joint siezes up.

Its a good bit of preventive maintenance on such an expensive and vital part.
