So, I was driving today and realized that I have 2 electric motorized seats that are both heated.... Is it possible to remove the heaters and motors from our seats... it would probably cut about 150 pounds from the overall weight of the car...
Thanks guys

Re: Cutting weight.... (gmugolf)

Well, I don't think you'd be saving a lot of weight removing the heaters, but if you do, gimme a shout and I'll take them off your hand.
The seats however. Jeez they some hefty pieces. Apparently Volvo had a overstock of iron girders they had to put to good use, cuz' those seats could be considered part of the chassis.
But (disclaimer: my opinion, and also not a subject matter expert) I don't think removing the motors will save you much, unless you spring for custom seats such as recaro et al. And doing that loses the side airbags. Hope I'm not being Debby Downer on you.
Anyone care to chime in?

Re: Cutting weight.... (gmugolf)

To be honest I don't think the heating filaments or the seat motors weigh that much. Maybe if you were putting in some Recaro or other racing seats it would take out that much weight, but if I recall correctly someone recently said in another thread each seat weighs 45+lbs...
The only way I see any real weight saving is to completely gut your car by removing all the crap in the trunk (carpeting, foam, etc), removing the AC, tearing out all of your seats and replacing with racing seats, removing your interior door panels, CF hood, trunk lid, other body panels, etc.
Our car body is heavy, not much we can do about it without completely gutting it and removing anything and everything luxury...
I think you are on the right track, but I am not sure how far you want to go with this, it almost sounds like you would be happier having a car that is a dedicated track car, or perhaps that is what you want this one to be?
EDIT: Dang you I Saw 50, ya beat me to it, lol. But to further add to what you said about the stock seats, they actually did design them to be a part of the side impact safety features by sticking a super strong bar in the seat to prevent it being crushed from the side. So there really is a reason why the seats weigh more than most...

Re: Cutting weight.... (EngTech)

their was a guy who weighed the stock seats , around 47 lbs (leather) and replaced them with Recaros about 20 lbs ( they also make a CF version around 9 1/2 lbs.
I might lose the spare tire (as well as take the one out of my Volvo ) to sheed a few lbs

The seats are heavy, but not as heavy as I thought... Thanks for the info guys, it looks like it would come down between gutting the car and a turbo kit..... We will see

Seats really arent that heavy and the heating elements are just thin pads laid over the top of the factory cushions and maybe weigh a pound lol. If you really wanna remove them ill take em as my wife would appreciate that haha.

Placebo affect lol. Once you remove something you feel like its quicker since your paying attention to stuff more. My turbo screams louder lately, must be because its nice out and i have my windows down what what haha
