I'm looking for suggestions on what to use for a cat-back exhaust on my '96 854Turbo. I've got an ipd ecu and from what I've read, it's best to have a freer flowing exhaust on the car.
So, in lieu of paying way too much for an ipd exhaust, I was going to have a good local shop mandrel bend some pipe. My questions are, what diameter pipe should I use, and what silencer should I use? For the silencer, something as close to the stock volume levels... and drone-free would be what I'm looking for.
thx!

I think IPD's unit is probably compromised one. It's not all that quiet, but pretty bearable by most of the people's standard. It's not as quiet as Supersprint's dual muffler system, but that SS setup really chokes the high end power outta these T5s.
A custom system is always going to be cheaper, but I can almost assure you that you won't be able to get it quieter than SS or iPd's system.
Want more flow, it will just get louder. That's just the way it is.
2.5in or 3in, use two mufflers, check out how iPd did theirs with one where the huge pan is and another back under the trunk. Try to have the bigger one (if one is bigger) behind the car and it will keep the noise back away from the cabbin as well. I have the iPd and putting the seats down really amplifies the sound b/c one of the silencers is under the trunk area. I like the sound personally... I wish my iPd was a hair louder at times... but, i'm 18 and like that sort of thing
Good luck,

Definitely go the custom route~~!
I had been pondering the very same thing and finally decided to get mine all mandrel bent to my specs. It's great. I got 2.5" t304 stainless steel with downpipe and highflow cat. The exhaust sounds so mean, and has a low rumble to it. You can hear it, and the noise peaks at around 1600 rpm's but it's still subdued and enjoyable. Most of all is the performance gain that i noticed immediately. You can definitely control the boost pattern of the car a whole lot more with the throttle, it's just more predictable and fun to drive.
Make sure that it's mandrel bent though, otherwise you'll loose interior diameter of the pipe and will create bottlenecks.
Enjoy,

Thanks guys for your help. Kai, you're correct (of course) about the fact that it'll be louder. I don't care if it's a bit louder, that's a given, but more accurately, I don't want it to drone. I had an exhaust from Group6 (dating myself here) on my 9000T and it was really good (forget the brand they used), but droned horribly at 2400rpm, right about 70mph.
So, some more noise is fine... the stock exhaust is super quiet imho anyway, I am basically trying to let the car breath but not have it droning. What silencers are you guys running then?
thx again!

Arhh..the droning. Yes, actually the droning is a bit much on the C70 now. Not in an annoying way, but noticeable dB.
I'd say around 1900~2100, I can hear the droning if I'm coasting. But if I drive the car fast enough, there's no droning... (duh, of course).
I have no cat, 3" piping all the way, a 3" Ultra Flow by Dynomax for the mid section, then a 3" Blitz Nur Spec with 4.5" tip(yup a r1cer can!). For no cat and 3 inch all the way, it's not too loud at all. But definitely not quiet.
I haven't had a chance to try either my A'PEXi silencer tip and the Blitz one after I took off the cat and the addition of ultraflow muffler. I think it should be pretty quiet..maybe as quiet as IPD's system or even quieter.
Note that ultra flow usually helps to have some very quiet idle level compares to most of the other brand muffler out there.
You might want to try the Magnaflow, too. Lots ppl have good experience with them.
Hey guys,
I'm going to kinda jump in here. I have removed my cats, i have a 3" downpipe all the way through, mandrel bent pipe, and it goes out to some 4" forgot name muffler system... i'll need to check on that... When I made it, I was in the r1ce mood, so I wanted it to be really loud, and sound like a pissed off bumble bee... that was a stage, so now I was hoping for something quieter, and my muffler shop, put a silencer on her a couple days ago, and it worked out pretty well... it's got that low groan to it all the time, but it peaks at around 1800...

Thx for everyone's input. I checked out the Magnaflow silencers... they look to be really good quality. I guess the big question now is, what dimensions work for the 854? I'd probably go w/ a 3" i.d. pipe, just so I only have to do it once. Maybe I'll have to get underneath and see how much space lengthwise there is aft of the axle section. Jesse, what silencer do you have now?

Okay, another stupid question following...
I've not spent too much time under my 854, so I was thinking about this exhaust and got down on the garage floor (too lazy to run it unto ramps just then) and was shocked to find NO muffler under the trunk, but a large flat pancake form-fitting job just fore of the axle. Stupid question is... that's the muffler, yes? So, why on earth did they design something like that?
Next, almost as stupid question... is this where I'd be putting my aftermarket muffler on my pending custom 3" stainless, mandrel-bent exhaust, or do I put a small one there and a second muffler under the trunk? The real estate in the rear looks scarce. Remember, I'm trying to avoid 'da drone' with this but let the car breath.
Pointers, suggestions, pictures of what YOU did, pointing and laughing?
thx ladies and gents,
/Scott
