Here is the prototype of the button I'm using as the mute for the Escort 8500. Been using it a couple weeks and it works flawlessly.

The top light is on when the power is on the radar detector and the car image below flashes blue when alerting. Press it and it silences the detector. Total cost was about $35 but I already had the smartcord for the escort.

Detector on, no alert, solid amber light

Detector on, Alerting on Radar, Flashing Blue

Location of detector

I need to order a second switch, You can see I melted the right side of that one with the soldering iron

I also need to change out a resistor to make the amber not so bright.

In a nutshell here is what I did. (BTW when I get the new switch I'll post detailed instructions with photos of the second build)

Parts List:
1 Smartcord unit from Escort :https://www.escortradar.com/cp...irect
1 Volvo Security Switch from John at Boston Volvo (for mine it was P/N 8698074-5)
1 Blue LED from Radio Shack (5mm, 3.7v, 20mA, 2600mcd) and assorted resistors although I haven't figured out exactly what the best resistance to use will be.
I don't know if the pre-06s had the blanks that mine has or not so you may need other parts also.

Instructions
- Figure out how you plan to route the wires inside the dash first. I didn't do this step first and ran into a problem later. Basically there is no room to route the wires out the back of the switch, you have to take them out the bottom or out the side. If you go out the side you will need to hollow out a blank on the side you route the wires from. Then notch the base of the switch panel so you can run the wires through that.
- Open up the Smartcord and remove the two LEDs and switch.
-- Solder in at least 12" wires to the PCB because you will need to reuse the housing from the smart cord and it will need to go behind or below the radio area.
-- Replace resistor R4 with a TBD resistor, the original was 460k, I tried 800k but it still isn't enough. I'll test a 1200k next.
-- Reassemble the housing running the wires for each LED and the switch out of the whole they came from. Make sure you know which wire is +/- for the LED since they only list if polarity is correct.
- Open the Volvo Switch, unsolder the brown plug from the PCB and trash it.
-- Remove the light bulb from the white bulb base and insert the new LED into the base, it fits pretty well.
-- Solder the wires from the smart cord onto the Volvo PCB or the new LED.
-- Make everything as slim as possible so you don't interfere with the electronics on the Volvo board behind the switches.
- Route the wires as required and insert the switches. Test it out and you should be good.

Hope you enjoy.

Re: Custom Escort Mute Button in R (Pat S)

Without a doubt, some great work.
But for what need is a radar detector? Isn't the R the ultimate Q-ship?

nice work! this is where I put mine, not nearly as elegant as your install, but easy to reach the mute button. you might want to consider moving your unit into the black region behind the RVM, with just the laser window in the clear. the radar effectiveness is apparently now affected by the black tint. makes it easier to use the sunshade also

Ahhhhhahahahha.. I'm going to have to do that with my V1. If only to add to my switch complement.

Too bad I didn't get park assist.

Anybody know what the last switch blank is for?

We have 7 slots.

1 DSTC
2 RPPS (Rear Passenger Punishment System)
3 Park Assist
4 Trunk Valet
5 Power Folding Mirrors
6 Volvo Security System
7

What's left? I have three empty slots right now and I don't know what to do with them. (other than the mute switch)

I'm just curious - does the use of the Escort smart cord "black out" the main unit's display similar to the remote display unit for the V1? I don't like it when everyone knows I have radar... Great work. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

No it doesn't. But you can manually set it. If memory serves there are four levels of brightness.

Does anyone know what Volvo switches are available? Is there a functional blank switch?

I really like what you did...real good work minus the solder burn. I would like to do similar for a master switch for my lights and siren.

Re: (Copeland)

Very creative idea, excellent execution.

Just move your radar detector as a unit down about one inch, past the tint. Performance increases greatly if there is no tint in front of the antenna.

Nice install, have been thinking about it for a while. I have the SRX installed and I am looking at moving the mute switch to the seven button panel, and the remote display unit into the guage console plastic I have a couple of quick questions:
1. How do you get access to the 7 button panel?
2. How do you remove the black plastic that surrounds the guage panel (speedo, RPM)?

There's no blank switch to my knowledge.

Depending on year and model, the switches break down something like this:

-Folding head restraint
-Folding mirrors
-STC
-DSTC
-Alarm
-Auxiliary light
-Child-proof lock
-Bi-Fuel
-Private locking
-Active chassis
-Parking assistance
-Rear air conditioning

For '07:
-Blind spot info system
-Active headlamps

While they're listed in VIDA, not all of these swtches are used - or can be ordered - in the US.

Now wait to go taking it off just yet..... you need to DC your battery unless you like going to the dealership and spending money to reset your airbags.

I usually put my key to position II put my car down to the steptronic mode take a knife or better yet the IPD bone tool and lift up the assembly turn it to the side carefully and the go after those torx.

Thx copeland.

vizwiz, can you answer my #2 question?

it just slides straight out. it's held in place by a few friction clips. you might find a bone tool handy for getting it started. I highly recommend this kit:

Hey Vizwiz, I just ordered a set of door pins from you. How long does it usually take for arrival?

and how hard was it to remove the instrument panel?

My wife.... She actually got pulled over one day for doing 60 in a 55. It was 0530 in the morning and her and the unmarked car were the only car on the road.
He gave her a warning...

I'll give it shot, I didn't think the suction cups would stick there... I like to keep it somewhat hidden so thugs walking by don't decide to smash a window and grab it...

On the 6 models you just use the bone tool and the cover for the switches pops off. No screws. If you want to remove the whole box that includes the radio, HVAC, and switchs as well as all the trim, you remove the two screws under the shifter cover.

Very good point! I should have done that, but was very carful not to disconnect any electrical connections (except the wires to the 12V plug which I tapped for power to the radar detector. Didn't have a problem, but better to disconnect it just in case.

Thanks again guys!

pins will probably be there by the end of the week.

panel removal was quite easy, much easier than the HVAC console
