Hi guys,

I'm considering selling/trade in the R-Design.

There are not many for sale and the ones that are for sale are usually V8s around my area so it's hard to gauge other than nada or edmunds etc. Nada for example puts the retail at a little over $26k including the warranty. That's probably a bit high but what do I know.

09 XC90 R-Design
Passion Red
72500 miles
AWD
Climate package
CPO warranty until 100k or Nov 2014
Excellent condition, dealer maintained since new and all services performed on schedule.
Needs new set of tires within 2-3k miles so have to keep that in mind.

Thanks in advance for your insights.

Look up kelly blue book values, based on what you want to do. If you sell it yourself (private party) you can usually get more for it than if you trade it in. If you are looking for a new vehicle then I would figure out what vehicle you want and then shop dealers against each other until you get the best overall deal for you. A high trade in value with a high purchase price may not be as good as a lower trade in value and a more competitively priced vehicle. Then if you fiance it, there is the question of the financing terms. Also once you have a new vehicle you can take it to the service dept of your choosing, don't let the sales guy sell you the service department when you are buying a vehicle.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have a general idea of it (or so I thought), but I was low-balled on a potential sale/trade in from a dealership so I'm wondering where the current market is. I bought my car outright last year and will be doing the same for the next one (or trade for one with similar value).

After my initial post I found a car just like mine (3.2 XC90 RD AWD from 2009) but with about 10000 miles more listed at a non-Volvo dealer for over $24000 without CPO warranty which I do have on mine. My car is better than that one so I would think I should get a similar price? Maybe a grand or two less from a private party but certainly not below 20k?

I bought my 08 at the end of november with 60k, dealer maintained, new tires, brakes, and fluids. Interior has climate, RSE, and NAV for 21k with CPO. Now, mine is not the R Design, and here in Boston, I have only seen a few of the Red ones, so that might be something going against you. But just to give you an idea on price.

The dealer will always give you less for a trade in than you can buy it from them for or what oyu can get private party. They have to pay bills not to mention the cost of "restoring" the car.

Just picked up a 2008 inscription with nav, dvd, back up cam, 19" wheels, orange leather with less than 100k here in Montreal for $21k...

My friend works for a dealer, Prior to buying by 2007 XC90 V8 RD with all options but RSE and 69,000 miles last year.

I asked what wholesale was on the truck he told me $18k - $19.5k. I bought my 07 for $21,000 + Tax

Purchased my V8 in 2011 for $13k (Sticker price was $22k and talked dealer down) as-is with no warranty.

I've probably put in around $4000 in repairs, maintenance, and other work on the car. Still needs some work, it's leaking out of the oil cooler right now.

I got it appraised at Carmax for $12k a few weeks ago at 119k miles.

2006 V8
Every available option EXCEPT aux lights, interior motion sensor alarm, and rear seat entertainment.
Dark leather interior

I just got a loaded titanium/calcite 2008 V8 Sport with every single option for $14500. 73k miles and it has the 20" Cratus wheels.

Wholesale for your 09 3.2 with similar miles is probably around $16-18k.

Thanks for the replies.

They offered me $7000 less than I paid 10 months prior. I was really disappointed in that. Wholesale pricing is not fair pricing for a CPO vehicle which needs absolute nothing except the new tires and a for sale sign and which has full service records since new from that same dealership. It is the perfect car for them to sell.

I didn't expect them to overpay on a potential buy "back" but this is a ripoff.

That is $700 a month. What would a lease on a new one have been? How many miles did you drive it in 10 months, what would your cost per mile be compared to a lease of the same car?

I think a lease is $539 per month or something like that. I've driven 13k miles in 10 months.

I'd get it if it was new but on a used car this is way too big of a drop. I've found the same car as mine but with more miles for $24700 on auto trader as I mentioned earlier and it had no warranty.

Another thing that bugs me is that they're quick to point out the worn tires but 13k miles ago the same tires were perfectly good to sell on a CPO vehicle (within spec they said) so I got screwed on that.

Another year older, and you paid retail plus tax versus wholesale. Tires are maybe $1500.

So $7000 less is about right.

I grew up in the car business and that's how it works.

And even though its already CPO, has to be recertified if sold by a retailer and Volvo's cutoff is 70k miles.

So for ten months it would have cost you about 5400 if you leased, possibly add the sales tax to that number. if you traded it in you would have gotten how much in sales tax savings to reduce the 7000 hit?

Tires are about 800 retail. I think you got "screwed" out of 2000 max, closer to 1000.

When I bought or sold a car to/from a private individual, it usually came in at a bit over wholesale plus tax. Never near the retail with the exception being my 93 Z28 with a six speed viper transmission from the factory, no t tops, and 30k miles in 03. The book added a whopping 700 for the miles. I paid a few grand more than that.
