Food for thought! My wife is currently driving an 04' XC90 which she really likes. Her commute to work is only 6 miles daily, and while she love the room of the SUV, she wants a vehicle that will give her better commute mileage.
Any thoughts about the Cross Country or a S60 to repace her XC90? It's the mileage factor that she's really concerned about (18 for her SUV vs. 24+ for the Cross Country or S 60). I've had 2 S 60's previously and loved them both.
Have fun with this one!
Newie

Re: Cross Country or S 60? (newie)

We have both an XC70 and an S60. We are impressed with the highway mileage of the XC70 considering its size, capacity, weight, and AWD. However, city mileage is not that good at all. My wife also has about a 6 mile commute daily and she seems to average about 17 mpg around town - heavy car and lots of starts/stops seem to be the reason. This is slightly lower then the estimates. My S60 (NA, 5-speed manual) does much better then this around town in a similar setting. If you are considering getting rid of you XC90 for better (city) commute mileage, the S60 offers the only real difference of the 2 cars you are comparing.

How about the V70 T5 or 2.5t? Same size as the XC, no AWD penalty in mileage. Both would fit the bill the same as the XC, the only factor to consider is climate (snow). You may want the additional ride height and AWD if you live in a climate that gets a lot of snow.

I don't care what the EPA numbers are, when you're only talking about that short of an amount, things like car heat up, etc. come into play.
However, let's say that the EPA numbers are right. You're comparing Highway miles above, you should compare city miles. Now, I don't know if your car is a 2.5T or a T6, but let's assume as a worse case scenario, I use the V8's city mileage. The XC70 gets 19 City, the XC90 V8 gets 15.
You're wife's daily round trip is 12 miles. In the XC70, she would use 0.631 Gallons of Gas. Say $3.25 / Gallon and her daily gas cost is $2.05. In the XC90 she would use 0.8 Gallons of gas, for a daily gas cost of $2.60.
To save $0.55 / day, how much are you going to have to lose in depreciation when you sell / trade your '04? Not worth it!
She must be putting on more miles than that for it to be a concern.

Many thanks for your imput! I do agree with you a bout the EPA figures. She loves the ride of the XC90, and that in itself may persuade her to keep this car. She has that special 'mist green' metallic paint that looks green/silver/grey depending on if the sun's out!
I gues that's why men are from Mars, women are from Venus!
Newie

A two-year-old VW New Beetle/Jetta diesel will get 40+mpg (actual) on a commute of any distance.
George Dill

Newie.....
I cannot, in clear conscience, advise you to make any move at all...based only on a "mileage concern". It doesn't sound as if you drive enough to actually realize any appreciable gain. IF she is using the "mileage issue" as a justification fro getting a new car...then you have a decision to make. Do you get an 06 with all the $$ incemtives?...wait for an 07? ....or wait for the re-designed models?
Maybe you should consider a trip to Sweden this time..... THAT might justify things a little better!

Hi Bob,
To quote Monty Python,"say no more, say no more!!" She has seen the light (not to mention the numbers!) and in the case of 'Deal or no deal' has decided to take the 'no deal' choice!!
The good news is that a trip oversseas in the future looks more of a possibility then trading. I always enjoy your comments and thoughts Many thanks!!
Newie
