You know, honestly I would not have got into VOlvo if my car was not sitting in the lot at my dealership. Anywho, I have no mechanical problems with it, which is great. However, I am a stickler when it comes to certain things like cosmetic issues. Here is my list of things that are bothering me:
1) driver seat leather is wrinkling, and degrading
2) power seat function stops working a second or so after starting the car
3) black side moldings/trim on the doors is fading to white
4) windshield and headlights are pitting, though you can't see them from a distance, however I notice them all the time when I am driving.... kinda annoying
5) the Tethy wheels are showing major degrading issues (paint wise)
6) the plastic railing on the roof, that covers the waterway is fading/spotting white
7) broken front, driver's side speaker grille
8) sagging glove box when closed
Now, do you guys think I am being picky here? or is this something all cars have at some point? Do other Volvos have this problem?
Thanks,
Brian

I have a 2001 too- a Black S60 T5 manual. It's my first car so I'm not 100% sure on how normal a lot of these things are but I'll tell you my experience.
1) Driver seat leather is wrinkling, I've just purchased some Lexol in hopes of reconditioning all the seats. Mainly because the new S60's have such soft leather and I want something similar.
2) I had this issues on the passenger side door, really early on. They replaced it no questions.
3) Black mouldings are going white, and count yourself lucky for not getting any wax on them.... it just makes it a crap load worse. I plan to do something, still trying to figure out if I want to have them sanded and repainted or buy a new set of 2005+ mouldings and have them painted (they come primed already). Issues arises when you want to do the front as it has a different pattern.
4) Not going to lie, I have no idea what this means. I have no 'chips' in either so I'm going to guess I'm okay. My headlights are yellowing but don't have the funds to do anything about it - not much when it comes to support for aftermarket (or newer OEM) lighting for the S60 in any forum.
5) The Tethys are garbage. Cleaning them seem to make it worse. I'm getting a set of Heicos, since i have a bent tethys and four tires needing replacing anyways.
6) Mine are good.
7) Mine are good. Check out a scrap yard maybe?
8) It even rattles, my dealer says live with it or put padded tape around it!
9) ...don't forget the crappy... CRAPPY plastic cup holder with the crappy plastic hinge on the crappy plastic cover that likes to snap like crappy plastic.
I'm also getting some random rattling somewhere that I can't seem to find. Also, road noise has seemed to increase, need to see what I can do about this.
You're not being picky. It's annoying to maintain a fit and finish that goes along with owning a 'Volvo'.
Having a car is a money hole, when it becomes a hobby it's a money pit... and its worse when your first car is a Volvo and it becomes a hobby. But heck, its worth it to be a lil' bit unique IMO.
10) Oh and another post reminded me, the plastic gas door snapped off on me once. It was after my first wax job on it... I told the ladies that it was for the rally look.
11) My sunroof failed on me this morning actually.. i pressed the button, it started to open halfway it gets jammed i hear some scraping and tiny pieces of black plastic started falling on my damn head. Now when I open it the damn screen gets pulled with it all the way too halfway, then i have to hold the button fi i want it to keep opening... but it makes scary cracking and scraping noises when doing so.
12) 'Position Light' keeps going out. Then comes back online, ten off and seems to be off. Might actually have to change it this time. Don't think its coming back.
This car has me so infatuated that I don't remember the bad as much as I should.

Can't say that I have any of the same problems, but then again my car is still new. I do get the position light warning quite frequently. It comes and goes. Whe I was last in for service, I had the dealer check it. Of course it disappeared. Then two days ago, it came back. That is kind of annoying.

Re: (Strange Dog)

I have a 2001 S60 (8/2001 build date). I've owned it for almost a year now. I swear it was previously garaged or owned by an older person. It's absolutely pristine inside. Leather is perfect, all trim inside is like brand new. Even the carpets are as clean as new thanks to Volvo's rubbers mats. Some cars are taken care of and some are abused. Only issue cosmetically I have is the black trim on the outside of the car fading slightly.

It worked great!! Its been two weeks and no signs of decay. I washed the car prior to application and let it dry for several hours. I have heard that you can prep it with mineral spirits (if needed) prior to application. I put on one coat, let it dry for 24hours, then put on another coat. So far so good. If you do this, just be sure you have a paper towel ready to wipe the run-off of the paint before it dries.
