Re: Cop Radars (mikeman715)

Back when I was driving over-the-road the ESCORT was the only thing to run but that was a LONG long time ago.
I'd get a Valentine, the newest latest model. Guy I know has one that's 3-4 yrs old and He really raves about it. From what I read, all the good Tech guys from Cincinnati Microwave (company that makes Excort) jumped ship to Valentine.

The passport 9500 and the V1 are the top two best radar detectors out there. Either one will suit you just fine, as long as you realize that there are other ways for police to detect your speed. Cops don't always have their radar guns on (and can detect your speed by turning it on before you even know they are there), Laser is a hard thing to detect as well, and usually by the time you get a warning, they already clocked you, then there's VASCAR, etc. You have a radar detector, not a cop detector. Keep your eyes open and look for police, don't travel so far in excess of the speed limit that you can't slow down, and be as safe as you can while going over the speed limit that the government has deemed safe.
BUT if you avoid just 2 tickets with it, it's already paid for itself. I'm running a blue passport 8500 myself, and it has saved my bacon more than once.

Re: Cop Radars (flying uittos)

These days the only people who use radar are local or county police. State troopers all use laser or airplane.
If you just want to detect - then get a Passport 9500 or a V1. If you want to detect and jam laser - get the escort Passport SRX.
But as good as technology gets, you still have to worry about cops following behind you

GREG - I read it.. the whole thing...like about ANYTHING else on the net, everybody has THEIR opinion of what's best.
I still have my 25 yr old ESCORT, I've put over 100,000 miles on the S40 and I've NEVER put a mile on it with the Escort even in the car. I just run with traffic, or 5 mph over the limit.....Life is Good!

I love NY you can get away with 10-15 MPH over just about anywhere on Long Island .... I had the escort with the blue display i forget the name but it was awsome saved me many times.
My friends V1 seemed to be alot better though, except for the fact that he had to send it in yearly' for updates...
$$$

Re: Cop Radars (mikeman715)

I've been using a Passport 8500 for 8 years and would highly recommend one. I've been thinking about upgrading to the new 9500i with the gps technology.
Radar detectors are not perfect but even if it saves you from one ticket it paid for itself (ticket, insurance rates, etc). I'm not a speeder, but there are zones where the speedlimits drop from 55 to say 35 and you are decelerating but still over the posted speed.

Re: Cop Radars (jdsr917)

Whats up guys, new to the Forum! Now Ill let you in on some hush hush info. All police departments still use radar, not every car has it! Will ur radar jam it yes, but them you have laser, like someone said b4, laser isnt on until the cop points and presses the trigger, at that point, ur caught. Now theres also clocking, thats when a cop follows some distance behind you and uses there speedometer to see how fast ur going which is accepted by all traffic courts due to the speedometer being calibrated every month. Now with all of these theres one problem, it doesnt matter how good ur detector is, because police are trained, especially highway patrol, in the estimation of the speed of a car which also is held up in traffic courts! So with that said, a cop knows when his radar is being jammed and if he really wants too he can make that estimation, which will be worse for you, and then win in court! Now for all you New York City guys, as long as you stay under 20mph over the speed limit, you will never get pulled over by a highway cop, Trust Me, if you dont get who I am by now! Any questions, feel free to ask!

Re: Cop Radars (vivek9856)

I think there is no real answer to that, it all depends on the cop. An officer is just a regular person after all so their personalities range from super nice to the God Complex ones. The only time I have ever gotten a ticket was from the latter, a complete douche who picked me out of a crowd of cars that were going the same speed or faster than me because I was the only one from out of state. Out of state=less likely to show up in court to argue, which = more money for the state. I hate Idaho State Patrol...

Its easier then that, take a lawyer and walk free and clear every time. Daily I do 20 over the limit. Just keeping up with traffic, if you know where the cops are and have good eyes, its way better then a radar detector.

Re: Cop Radars (carreragt7)

True that. I got a ticket in North Carolina on I-95 doing 80 and I'm convinced it was because I had out of state plates - there were plenty of drivers doing at least 90.

Re: Cop Radars (vivek9856)

Every cop is different, like carreragt7 said, some are nice some r just *holes with that god complex, me personally, and most guys I know like it when someone just admits that they were wrong, when a cop asks, "do u know why i stopped u?" and you say yes i was speeding im sorry, i have no excuse for it,. I let people go on that also when someone comes up with a original excuse, which is very rare, 99% of the time someones used it already, but I'm a big fan of the original excuse! Gives me a laugh! Now as for the lawyer thing, well, it all depends on who the lawyer is going against! Hwy Patrol will win most all of the time, so not only did u just get points on ur license and a nice fee but just paid some douche $250-300 for nothing. Use caution with lawyers! It all comes down to, what kind of cop it is, how the traffic courts are and what kind of ticket was written! Me personally, when I was younger used to show up to court and plead guilty with an explanation and also ask if he can raise fine with no points, which most of the time they will do if ur record isnt that bad and they allow it in that traffic court! I could keep going on, but thats for another time! Hope I helped some of you out!
