My 2005 S40 has about 33,000 miles. I noticed recently that the coolant has changed from the flourescent green color to a brownish color. Is this something to worry about? Just drain, flush and refill? Is it covered under the 36,000 mile warranty?

If you have not changed your coolant fluid in 33,000 miles ou should do it. It is good practice to change it every 30K miles. Many techs say that you can leave it there for 45K miles. I flush mine very 30K miles.
Yannis
Thanks for the quick reply Yannis!
So you've moved out to SD from Penn? You sold me my extended warranty from Stillman.

Re: Coolant color (dugums)

This is very interesting. I brought my car into my local Volvo dealer last year and asked to have the cooling system flushed and filled. I'm sitting in the waiting room for about 5 minutes when the service manager pops his head in and says that Volvo claims the coolant never has to be replaced! I had them do it anyway. Never heard of permanent coolant (unless the radiator is made of stainless steel alloy which I doubt!)

Even if the radiator was made of stainless steel alloy (it is not), the coolant fluid will eventually lose its properties.
Yannis

Re: Coolant color (Seitch)
So if you have an 2005 S40 and your coolant color changes from flourescent green to brownish, you should go to the dealer have them check for transmission oil contamination of the coolant AND coolant contamination of the transmission oil. If you have the former, you need to change out the transmission oil cooler. If you have the latter or both, you need to change out the transmission oil cooler AND the TRANSMISSION.
Check out this thread.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=64085
Here is the TSB on the issue.
http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Vol....html
Apologies for starting a 2nd thread on this issue.
