Hi Everyone,
I have seen on Ebay several S80 Xenon headlights for sale and was curious if there was anything I would need other than the Xenon headlight to make the conversion...i.e. (fuse, relay). I am assuming there is but was curious if anyone has looked into it or done it already. THANKS!

Re: Converting to Xenon headlights (zapp1846)

I think this might be a big job if the stanard S80 headlights are similar to my 08 V70's. The reason is that you are not simply replacing projector headlamps with Xeons (this, however, would be true for the C30/S40/V50). Instead the entire headlamp unit would need to be replace.
Good Luck!

Then I don't know if the headlights adjust their height via the 4C ride height sensors, or if there's some gyroscope of sorts that it uses to detect the optimum aim of the lights. So if the height sensing mechanism isn't built into the headlight housing, then you would need that too.
You might also want to lower the fuse rating for the lamps cause you're moving down from 55W halogens to 35W xenons. Again, you would need some VIDA download to fix the bulb out message.
I don't think there is an easy way for you to retrofit the xenons yourself. You would just have to go to the dealer and ask them to do it...

Yeah...It's a bit more complicated than I thought. When I take the car in for its first service I will ask them about it.
Thanks DC and Vivek for the input!

But know that when you go to the dealer, you'll be in for a price shock. But also know that the xenons are definitely well worth it!

ABL is not available with non-Xenon headlights nor can it be retrofitted.

If you are looking for whiter light to make it easier to see, there are many after market bulb options available that may even be better than Xenons. Xenons are not the be all end all headlights. They have some bulbs now that shine different spectrums in different directions to make them even better.

Re: Converting to Xenon headlights (Freeworld)

Freeworld...are there any after markets bulbs you would recommend for the the S80? I have looked into them and I can't tell which is better.
I am looking for whiter bulb but nothing that will blind oncoming drivers or a bulb that makes it seem I'm trying too hard to look like xenons.

But if you are sticking with halogens, I don't believe there are any halogen lamps out there that can push as many lumens at 55W as the 35W xenons. Plus, if you are going towards whiter/bluer halogens, your lumen output would drop even further. And a xenon retrofit into a halogen reflector housing is sometimes iffy as to glare, etc.
So in the end, if you are comparing a high end Silverstar/other halogen lamp to the stock Volvo xenons, I think the xenon's would win hands down. Now an aftermarket xenon retrofit kit vs Volvo xenons is debatable. However, I think the volvo lamps would still win because I find ABL to be very helpful as well as the automatic leveling, plus the projector has a fairly good cutoff and does not blind oncoming users.

Maybe your best bet would be to swap out your main and high beams with whiter Silverstar halogens, and then swap out your fogs for a more yellow lamp to increase lumen output a smidgin as well as fog visibility.

You can just forget about motor devices unless you want to go the very big bucks route, and even then it may not be possible.
As for bulbs, I just saw something on MotorWeek about bulbs that give a white light straight ahead, but a more yellow light to the right and left to better illuminate signs. I don't remember the brand, but I'm sure you can find out a lot by perusing any good auto parts store.

I watched that episode as well. The bulbs are Philips Nite Guide which have the three color beam pattern. I wonder how well they work.

Re: Converting to Xenon headlights (zapp1846)

If you get the aftermarket Xenon (HID) Headlight Kit (includes Ballasts) off Ebay, you should be fine. I was able to install them in my '02 T6 without making any modifications whatsoever. I was questioning about leveling them better but they aren't that blinding to oncoming traffic. Most people have adapted to the Xenons on the roads because there are so many today (they are the best and safest street legal headlights on the market and consume 20 less Watts than Halogen). I checked into the "Blinding" factor myself and from far away they are bright to oncoming traffic, but so are most Xenon Headlights, because the brightness in the bulb is automatically directed more towards the street (so if you bend down the lower you go the brighter they get) which is why from far away they are brighter than get dimmer as you approach... As for the Bulb Out message, I didn't get one... It was a direct replacement and it worked fine, no VIDA, just a do-it-yourself upgrade that is always well worth the money (I paid about 119 USD). Hope this bit of info helps

Though I just realized I am on the newer S80 Forum, so I'm not sure, obviously I don't have a knowledge about the newer systems so the other Gentlemen are probably correct Sorry (haha)
