Has anyone ever done this and what parts are involved for the converting process.
Any info or point me in the right direction is much appreciated... http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

It depends somewhat on how far you want to go with the T5 theme.

You can swap the T5 motor into your 98 and put in an M56 transmission to make it FWD plus pedals, shifter assembly etc. Get a T5 M ECU or have your AWD auto one reflashed to a 450 or 608 ECU with or without additional tuning. From there you would get the steering rack for a FWD, drop the angle gear and prop shaft, and voila - FWD T5.

If you wanted to take it further I suppose you could get rid of the Rear Differential, VC etc. and completely change the suspension to the non-nivomat setup but unless you had a donor car with everything this seems very cost-ineffective given the amount of stuff that's different in the rear suspension.

I think I've got that right.

You could just convert your AWD to a manual and keep the AWD. You can still use a T5 motor if you wanted although there are advantages to the LPT motor with proper tuning and better rods.

It's not AWD but I did an auto to manual swap in my '04 C70 which is the same otherwise. Reading the thread will let you know what you're in for anyway.

Thanks all for replying so quick... Chilled Man:

This is what I was thinking about doing with $5000.00
1. Convert my current 98 V70 awd to a 98 V70 T5.
2. Make it a Manual Transmission
3. Upgrade the T5 with the IPD stage III kit.

My V70 have a low compression on cylinder 2 so at the moment it is dead and sitting in the garage. Could you at your convenience please point me in the right direction as what parts I will need to purchase for the updgrades to a T5?

Thanks,

Al

The best, and cheapest piece of advice I can give you, considering what you want to do, is to fork over the $8-9k that Justin wants for his M66 equipped (if he does it) 1998-2000 V70R (I forget what year).

Re: (Big Will)

Wait, wait, convert the awd to a manual? I thought they didn't make an awd tranny except in Europe? I have a 2000V70R and it would be AMAZING if it was a manual. So, is BigWill serious about that, or what?

You can convert a 1998-2000 AWD to a manual with the 6 speed manual from a 2004-2007 R and retain AWD capabilities.

Justin has the car and the transmission. Only needs a customer (with a refundable deposit).

I have the car but no tranny right now and the rebuilt engine and auto trany are back in the car so no M66 this time around.

its pretty much a straight swap minus the braket for the side mount and you can get lookforjoe to make them for you.

I went FWD manual with my 98R since I found a V70T5M that was wrecked for $650 and swaped everything over.

Simple dirty cheap way to do this whole deal will cost less then 1000.00

Do it the correct way and keep the car running for mucho longer spend 3k ish and upgrade / replace everything in the engine bay minus the engine itself lol

Yes, I was serious about that. And not quite in the way that someone responded saying to use the M66 AWD. That's certainly an option. There are at least a couple people who have swapped an M66 into their 98 V70 R/XC (Seamus and Hussein) and there are some more on the way including at least one into a 2000 R.

But, you can also use the M58 like I have which is how a 5 spd manual AWD would have arrived from the factory. The 99 and 2000 R were not made in manual anywhere, but the plain AWD/XC were in those years. You can source an M58 from Europe or get lucky and find one in Canada from an 850 AWD (there were about 50 of those in 96/97). I think all 7 - 98 V70 AWD manuals imported to Canada are accounted for so you can't get a transmission from any of those

Anyway, it's probably easier to find an M66 AWD than the M58, but either way it is possible.
Here's a thread to give you an idea:

Justin.................

*M66
*T5 engine + ECU
*all new hoses
*stage 0
*IPD Stage III kit
*LABOR

For $3k?!? Yeah right. IPD wants almost $3k for their Stage III kit, so.......

And the reason I brought up the M66 is because it is easily available in the US if one can find a scrapped R MT. If the OP wants to give up AWD capabilities, then the alternatives are more plentiful.

Plenty of M58s in Europe ;-)

But I agree as I said above that the M66 will be much easier to find in the U.S. Don't forget that it wasn't just the new Rs that had M66 AWD transmissions. The S40 T5 AWD manual had the same exact transmission so if you can find a wreck of those from 2004.5-2007 that would work as well.
