I removed the dumb access panel in between the front map lights and noticed its perfectly suited to a swivel dropdown sunglass holder. The inside area even has the bracket to hold the swivel pins. All we need to do is to find a matching swivel compartment from another car or modify existing panel to suit.
Any thoughts?

Re: Convert redundant access panel to a proper sunglass holder (JavaBeans)

I just bought the OEM one that replaces the grab handle (why there's one on the drivers side is a mystery anyway). Only cost me 30 bucks (CAD)
If all you're looking for is a place to put your sunglasses then why not try that? If you're trying to do something cool and custom then that's ok too and i'll be quiet )
Probably the best use of that location though is an XM satelite receiver which has been done on here.

Re: Convert redundant access panel to a proper sunglass holder (TFS)

I also got the sunglass holder to replace the handle. Works fine and was easy to install.
However, I've also been thinking that the space behind that acces panel could be used for something - like to hold the Bluetooth button panel. I'm thinking the BT panel would easily fit in an oval hole made to that panel. Question is, is it easy enough to extend the BT panel wiring harness?
One reason to put the BT in there is that I really don't find a perfect spot for it elsewhere. It looks out of place anywhere on dash.

I suppose it could be stuck up there with some kind of adhesive -- not as clean as actually cutting the panel, but I don't want the kit badly enought to investigate doing that.

I think if anything was in this space it would be a better use of space than it is now. I still get people coming in my car asking what's supposed to be there. When I tell them nothing they ask why it's there. I want to know too! Someone find a way to put something there!

Re: (mullmann)

I'm sure I've seen a pic from a motor show where volvo had actually put a cheaper sat nav display in there, with the diplay angled towards the driver so that it doesn't take any more looking than it does to glane in the rear view mirror.

Re: (Marmoset)

I've got the driver's and passenger's side sunglass holders instead of the grab rails. Very happy with them. I did notice one person who had a problem getting in my car, even though it is quite low to the ground etc, because there was NOT a grab handle there. I suppose if you deal with a person who is agility compromised you might not want to get them. They are also a bit small. The fashion is toward bigger glasses, luckily I'm not that fashionable, but if you are, you might want to try these things with your glasses. Someone on the board complained that they were to small. I like that I always know where the glasses are, well worth it.
It would be cool to find some use for that extra panel.
