There are a couple of quick ways to evaluate the condition of the control arm bushings. One of the easiest is to stand beside the forward edge of each front wheel facing towards the rear of the car. Give a moderate kick to each tire at the 9:00 position while watching the deflection of the wheel/tire assembly. If the bushings are in good shape, there should be very little, if any deflection. If the assembly moves easily, the forward bushings are shot. I used this method on my 2003 XC70. To verify your findings, raise the front of the car and place on jack stands. With the front wheels in the air, have an assistant grab the tire at the 9:00 and 3:00 position and rock the tire back and forth. Observe the movement in the forward control arm bushings. The parts guy at my local Volvo dealer says they sell a lot of forward bushings, but relatively few rear bushings.
Hope this helps.
Let's back up a little here. I don't know how much movement is considered normal for this design of bushing. I just received my new forward bushings, and I can deflect them more than I would have thought by hand. A close visual inspection of the bushings on the car will be necessary to help determine whether or not they need to be replaced. I am probably going to replace mine anyway, because I get what seems to be excessive movement from the wheel when I rock it back and forth with the front end in the air. My loosesness is not coming from the inner or outer tie rod ends.

Hey guys,
I changed my front control arm bushings a couple months ago. I had the same symptoms as you, and it cured it completely. With my bushings, i could see that the rubber was splitting when i inspected them closely. I did the job myself, so if you are going to attempt it, i might be able to be of some assistance.

Re: (phuz)

I am wanting to replace my forward bushing myself. What kind of press did you use to press the bushings out of the control arms. Did you run into any unexpected snags along the way? Did you disconnect the control arm from the ball joint at the ball joint stud or did you just unbolt the ball joint assy (two bolts) from the steering knuckle?

Re: (darylkaiser30)

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I saw it in a search I did. I too need to replace the control arm bushings, Has anyone found the poly bushings? is there any?
Am I correct to believe that there are two bushings per arm (a front and a rear) one mounted horizontally and one vertically. The have different part no. but are they different parts? I found one of the bushings on the eurosport website (for 1/2 as much as the dealership BTW) but I havent seemed to find the other one anywhere else but the dealership, anyone know where I can get them? Does ipd have parts that are not listed on there website?
