Hello to all!
I am considering purchasing a 2002 S60 AWD with 59K miles (private party.) Seems like a clean car but I'm still dropping it off at my mechanic for a once-over. As I am not really familiar with these cars, I'd appreciate recommendations on any specific components I should have him look at (besides the usual belts/hoses/etc.) I have read about faults with the angle gear/spline. Where exactly is that located and what should he be looking for?
Thank you very much and I'll keep you all apprised as to my progress with purchasing the car. Once I do, I'm sure I'll be here a lot for recommendations on power upgrade options
Thanks,
Steve

Your angle gear most likely is fine, this is a 197 hp monster, doubt it has the power to break the gear
It will be due for the MAJOR 60K service so figure that into your pricing.
Oh and take it to a VOLVO mechanic, taking it to a general mechanic is a waste of time (and money)

Re: Considering 2002 S60 AWD purchase (JRL)

Yup, I knew the 60K service was upcoming. The seller said he would get it "tuned up" before selling it. What's normally done at 60K other than plugs/filters/etc? What should the dealer charge for it? I'm in the northeast.
Oh yes, if I decide to upgrade the software, it won't be a 197HP beast anymore How's the PPC/filter route?

Same car as mine, i now have 90,000 miles with the mods in my sig and haven't had too many issues yet but I see some looming on the horizon.
1) Power steering hose had a tear in it and dripped, very easy fix. $80 repair
2) Alternator regulator crapped out, took the battery with it. $1,000 repair for parts, diagnostics and labor (thank goodness for warranty)
3) Ange gear case weeps fluid, this isn't major but seems to be getting worse. Will probably have to have it resealed, will replace the collar gear while I'm in there. Its located at the front of the driveshaft near the trans, looks like a little diff.
4) Intermittent vibration when shifting into reverse after start up. Just really started happening in the past 20,000 miles. Most likely the transmission will fail at some point. I have heard that the 01-02 had some transmission issues but it depends on luck and maintenance.

I bought an 4 yr, 100,000 mile extended aftermarket warranty from Universal Underwriters when I got the car from an Acura dealership, most dealerships should be able to set you up with an extended warranty.

how much do you pay a month? and it covers ALL non pre-existing conditions? no matter how little or small? or does it depend on the warranty?
yeah i hear 01-03 have bad transmissions, but i also know people with the car that runs better than mine! so its hit or miss, check the codes, fluids.
is he paying for the 60K service?!??!?! thats like, what guys, 1500 bucks? if you let them do everything they want even though you can do it lol.

Any decent independent shop should be able to do this for $450 or so.

All of the stuff could be done yourself too if the owner doesn't.
https://www.customers.volvocar...pg164

Re: (DGBibo)

The extended warranty was only another $1000 or so, the package I got was the Standard that covers all of the important stuff like engine, trans, drivetrain, electrical, suspension, etc.....Not covered are obviously consumables like brakes, belts, plugs etc..., glass and paint aren't covered. I have used it already to cover an alternator repair and it was worth it.

I have an '02 S60 @ 86,000 miles. The 60,000 service cost about $500. If you pay $1500, you need to find another dealer- that's ridiculous. FYI- my car eats light bulbs- seems to be a problem for a lot of '02's. Currently having a transmission problem- software upgrade didn't help. Considering a flush and fill of the tran fluid- hoping that will take care of it. It's a great car and I love it, but I'd suggest buying an '04 or newer.

Thanks for the info, chrisinpa...I'd gladly get an '04 or newer if I could afford one As it is, this car would cost me $8,500 which I feel isn't bad for an '02 with low miles and in generally good shape. It will need the 60K service, a valve cover gasket and probably two tires. I don't mind putting a grand into it if I end up with a (hopefully) solid and reliable car for under 10 grand. I'm told the angle gear isn't currently leaking and the tranny shifts smoothly (for now).
As to the tranny, is it more a matter of maintenance or luck of the draw...or both? If I grab it, it will be flushed and maintained immediately.
By the way, as to bulbs, were you referring to headlamp or taillamp? Anyone else have an issue with bulbs?

The transmissions from 01-03 are hit or miss, definitely depends on luck, how its driven and how its maintained. Seriously though, it might be worth saving a few thousand more to invest in an +03 for this reason. Transmissions aren't cheap, and you can expect to have problems around 100,000 miles almost regardless.

My car blew a few bulbs but it only blew each bulb once, I figure most were probably the original bulbs and they don't last 7 years. I went around the car and replaced all the bulbs with new ones and haven't had a bulb fail since then, this was over a year and a half ago. Also, these cars have common problems with alternator regulator failing and the alternator over charges the system, this can blow bulbs even if it it not a complete failure, at least it did on mine.
I love my '02 but I would gladly trade it for an '04 of equal value mostly because of the imminent transmission issue.

Re: (NJGreenBudd)

I totally understand and appreciate your suggestions! Sounds like if I go with this car, I should look at a third-party warranty. I don't think I want to go the eBay/Craigslist route to find an '04 as a dealer's price will be out of the question...

Yup that sounds like a good plan to me. I am going to try to get my transmission replaced in the next 10,000 miles before I my extended warranty is up. If I can get that can be done I will be very happy with this car for another 100,000 miles no problem.

8500 for '02 with only 60,000 miles ... to me that sounds like a great deal (as long as everything is ok with it, that is)
idk what do the rest of you guys think? it sounds under priced to me, which isnt a bad thing for you! haha
EDIT : What do i know ... just checked kbb and it is right in there
Re: (kentis19)

Well, I priced out some extended warranties. It appears the best buy is a 7 year additional/200K miles on the odometer warranty thru AA Auto Warranty that will cover at least all the main items prone to failure (angle gear, tranny, alternator regulator) as well as many other items. It's about $1,700. The steering and turbo wouldn't be covered though. The trick is that the total amount of repairs on the car can't exceed its value at the time of the repair. Hmmm, I wonder what this car will be worth in 7 years, lol.
I'll also be looking at a 2004 S60 AWD in black. The guy wants $14,000 but it comes with a 1 yr/12K warranty. If I like the car, maybe we'll deal. Off the bat, I don't think it has the 17" wheels like the '02 I'm looking at...
