We are excited to announce that we are live on our new forum platform!

It’s been a long time coming. Let’s face it. Sometimes older forum technology lags behind other parts of the internet. Although seeing the same format for a long time is comforting, the member experience shouldn’t include dealing with outdated, unsafe, slow software.

The transition to a new platform will never be 100% smooth but the days of dealing with out of date forum software are over. We have teams dedicated to building a world-class community for you. The development has been steady with regular software releases since May 2019. Asking members for feedback and coming up with ideas for improvement is what we want.

Speed and Reliability Are Key
No one should have to wait for information. This site has been built to be much faster and more reliable, period.

New Homepage Experience
Our algorithm will serve a personal customized feed based on your prior engagement with content on the site. If you’ve liked and or commented, or are following certain topics that are of interest to you, similar content will appear at the top of the homepage.

Search
We have introduced new search algorithms, powered by an industry-leading AI platform, to help you find information faster. We plan to roll out new features to continue improving search, and to power many additional areas of the forum.

Due to the volume of content, our search platform may take some time to complete indexing over the first few days after migrating. During this process, you may see a limited number of posts until indexing has been completed. We appreciate your patience.

Finding Your Way Around
We have made the design clean and simple to use. Near the upper right-hand corner of the community, you will see navigation icons.

The first icon is for what’s new on the site.

Clicking on it, by default, will take you to new unread posts. On that page, you can click on additional tabs as well, such as Popular, if you prefer to view active topics.

Clicking the list icon next to “NEW” will bring you to the full forum listing.

Clicking your avatar will give you a drop-down menu for all things related to your account.

You can also navigate more by clicking the 3 vertical dots.

Dark Mode
We have introduced Dark Mode. One of our favorite features allows you to access the site with a power-saving, and easier on the eyes dark mode. You can access it in the drop-down menu under the 3 vertical dots.

Save Bookmarks
Now you can save your favorite discussion threads and posts! Bookmarks are a handy way to remember and easily find great content or stuff you want to read later.

We also wanted to make it easier for new users to understand the lingo of forums. We have cleaned up various language to more commonly recognized phrases including:
  • Following - Thread subscriptions, and Watched are now known as Following
  • Conversations - Private Messages or PMs are now conversations and can be accessed from the user avatar drop-down in the main navigation
  • Showcase - Showcase is designed for users to "showcase" items/projects through the use of uploaded images, text descriptions and custom content categories. It’s a way to visually and textually provide detailed information on the content you wish to share. The showcase would be similar to a catalog, whereas the gallery would be like a photo album. It can be accessed from the drop-down menu with the 3 dots.
Take a tour and look around! Check out the Help section for some quick FAQs about the new platform.

Please keep all feedback, questions, concerns, requests for help, etc.regarding the new platform right here in this Feedback thread. This will help us make sure not to miss a request for help and also let us pass along your thoughts to our Product team. The Admins and I will be here to help along the way taking note of your comments.

Hello!
I will be here today as we begin to unpack from the move to this new software update. You may have a lot of questions or comments, or may need help orienting yourself to some of the things that look different around here. I hope I can help you feel comfortable navigating around.

My name is Gerrit, and I have been helping people figure out this software for the past year. Orienteering through new environments has always been in my life, from the different countries, states, and cities I’ve moved between throughout my life. Orienting yourself to new software usually takes time and I’ve found that having someone there along the way can help y’all get your bearings. While we all work through the new layout, it is all of these skills that I hope to bring here to you now.

Orienteering is never an easy skill, but with me as your guide through the site I hope that we can explore this brave new look for the site together. I won’t always have an immediate answer to your question, but I will work to find you the most accurate information together.

Please don't be afraid to explore and test out things to see how they work on the site. You can also see our FAQs here!

Although you can certainly use the "insert image" icon to upload an image to your post, you can also just drag and drop it to the text editor or even copy/paste it into there!

You can easily share your fave or latest videos just by adding the URL directly into the text editor!

Gif links from sites like giphy.com will display automatically just by adding the gif URL directly in the text editor. Try it while you’re looking around the site!

I am also a huge fan of the dark mode for the community, it’s much easier on the eyes. What is your favorite feature?

I will be here to answer questions and to help you navigate, as needed.

Not a fan of this new layout. Reinventing the wheel here when the old design functioned sufficiently.
I can't say I'm really crazy about it either, but I do think it is an improvement.

The old software was really dated, and usability suffered as a result.

I feel like this one is trying to be way too new, with curious non-functional UI elements, excessively large buttons and text, and way too much dead space. But that's where all UI design is sadly going these days. I question the suggested benefit of this "Card View" I just find it annoying.

(Somewhere in UI design school someone is teaching that this is the way to go, and I'd like to wring their neck. Please give me small buttons and compact information dense text)

I find the forum is much more usable in "dark mode" selectable using the comically large menu button on the top right side. Also, scaling the entire page to 90% makes the test size feel better (but the menu button elements and side bars are still really large)

The new image management is a huge upgrade. Welcome to the 2013 era forum software experience :p

I also can't quite figure out why on earth it is recommending other non-Volvo specific forums to me (Like AVSForum a forum for home theater and audiophile enthusiasts???) on the side.

Something like this would have been better, but I'll take it.

Looks really nice folks. My only suggestion would be to collapse the full forum listings so that we do not have to scroll through Volvo Club of America to get to the specific model sub-forums, or the classifieds for that matter.

Other than that, good stuff.

I took an art class back in college as part of my prerequisites. One of the phrases I remember is "Form over Function". This new user interface is very clunky and illogical. It attempts to appear relevant, but instead serves to be the opposite. I have figured out how to use the forum with this new software rather quickly, and I'm not resistant to change. However, change must serve as an improvement and not two steps backwards.

There's nothing about this new layout that enhances the user experience. In fact, I think it detracts far more than it has improved. Everything you said is spot on.

Agreed.

In fact, I would move the model subforums to the top. I've never even visited the local club subforums. Who even goes there?

I mean, I don't know about your local group, but mine has no posts for 2020 yet. There are a grand total of 10 posts since 2010. :p

I generally am okay with the look/feel because I'm used to it from other forums. It's the latest xenforo skin, so not much you can do about it. However, you can always navigate up to the 3 dots in the upper right, select view mode, and change it to "comfort" view.

Agree with Flat467 that you need to be able to collapse or minimize the full sub-forum lists. That's just a ridiculous amount of screen real estate to scroll through.

Otherwise, I appreciate the like buttons.

EDIT: I'm part of another community which is using xenforo and the full sub-forum listing on main page is the same. Really annoying. Not as bad as SwedeSpeed b/c they don't have the sheer number of regional, meet-up forums and models/years/generations, but still not a great experience.

Thank you for the suggestion of comfort view. That is much better. Still don't understand why the top menu needs to be so comically oversized though. I don't know if it is fixed or dynamic, but on my screen it is currently 64px tall. That's wasting a lot of screen real estate. Half that at 32px would probably be a lot more appropriate.

I know Is there anything I can help you find?

Like most of us, I am a creature of habit, so it takes me a bit to get used to changes. I was more than a little grumpy about it all at first. I was lucky enough to get the chance to play with the new platform before they went live with it so I am used to it now.

We will see regular updates which are largely fueled by community feedback. While that doesn't mean we can action every request, it does mean we are actively listening to the feedback and sharing it with the developers. :)

Don't know if you have a knob available to adjust this, but if you do, I have a suggestion.

In the recommended threads at the bottom when viewing and replying to posts, it does a pretty good job of identifying threads that are on the same topic. It does pull up some pretty fuzzy old threads though.

I almost necroed a "related" thread from 2005 before I noticed it was really old.

Is there a limit? Maybe set it to 5 years or something?

Also, is the link limit of 1 in signatures really necessary?

I added links to an image of each of my Volvo's in my sig. They get cut off becuase apparently the cutoff limit is two rows. I went in to see if I could shrink the font size a little to see if I could make it all fit without the reveal cutoff, but it won't let me save, because I have links to three images :(

Everything is indexing as of right now, because of the move. As things adjust it will be more accurate with time but right now it "thinks" all of the posts all simultaneously got posted.

As for signatures, there are new restrictions based on what is currently set up. Old signatures are grandfathered in, but if you'd like to know the current settings I can let y'all know that too.

Hey There! Here's my honest feedback from my initial impressions.
-I don't enjoy being bombarded with "Recommended" when you open the link; however, the /forums hotlink will be just fine in the browser :D However, I would like if all of the categories were shrunk and you could expand the one you'd like.
-Inserting quotes seems nice, but it's an extra hassle for one quote posts, VERY Good for quoting multiple sources, maybe pressing "Quote" would autofill and you'd still have access to the insert quote box past one quote, but hey, that's just me.
-I absolutely LOVE the easy photos, that was a nightmare before. I'll likely still use URL photos simply from the standpoint logged-out individuals can't see it, which could be a burden on the Non-Affiliated Finds for the Classifieds for example, thread browsing without the extra hassle.
-I can see from the experiences of a few others on the Non-Affiliated are concerned about colors on signatures, If I end up getting another car or forum addition, am I colorless? :D Just messing, It would be nice to have an easier color system, but custom color codes are appreciated as well :)
-Everything feels very nice to use when you're in the place you'd like to be, but the journey up to it is a nightmare currently.

Thank you for allowing me to give feedback! It's great to be a part of it :D

This new (and sudden) change is awful! I can't figure out how to skip just the most recent posts from the last time I visited, the icons next to each thread are distracting and navigating to other forums now takes much longer. I'm pretty bummed by this switch since I visit the forum so often. Not sure who worked up this layout, but I wish there was an option to revert back to the old one.

I mentioned this above, but you can switch off the "card" view to "comfort" view which is more traditional by going to the three dots in the upper right, selection view mode, and selecting comfort. That should help somewhat.

Love the new picture insertion! Just for this it is worthy. :)
Totally understood people have preferences on layout and colors. But I admit, long post with pictures like the OP post looks beautiful.

Happy to see the feedback! For the Quote option, try clicking "reply" to reply to one post, and quote to open multiple option. As for color in the signature. If BB codes are too high level to sort, I can work with the devs to make more user friendly options too.

  • Clicking the thread title will take you to where you left off, the 1st unread post.
  • Clicking the timestamp below the title will take you to the 1st post of the thread.
  • Clicking the timestamp above the last poster user takes you to the last (newest) post.
