So I decided to go to Lehigh University next year a few days ago after being torn between it, Villanova, and WPI (obviously for mechanical engineering) but I cannot bring the R on campus for (at least) freshman year. I'm pretty bummed out not too mention I live 5 and a half hours away from the school so having a car with me would have been a major convienence. Well, I guess it will just have to share the garage with my dads boxter for the year...

Well, there's always another way to look at it...at least you're not putting heavy mileage on it! Plus, a year from now and when you go home for break, you'll appreciate it just that much more
Good luck in school, I'm actually graduating in 2 weeks

Say you got an off campus job. Maybe they will let you get a parking space. Or else, make friends with sophomores. When you come back after break, have them give you a parking sticker.

I think we would charge people like $500 for the semester but now that I think about it they were all hot females. So gender and presentation was important in qualifying for a spot. Re:

I'd say wait and see how things are at college before bringing the car up there right away. If it were me, I wouldn't want my car left out. where i went, people broke into cars all the time. If you don't have off-street parking your car will just get trashed anyway.
my second year after i moved off campus in an area apartment, out of 4 cars that were at our building 3/4 were broken into, some numerous times. Cars weren't special, nor had crap sitting in them either. there are just a lot of ass hats around that don't respect others things. yes, that could happen anywhere but seemed around campus it was worse.

Go to Villanova, then and you can rent (cheap) a garage space from me.
I live about 3-4 miles from Villanova.
Find a friend at school who drives and can drop you off on Fridays and pick you up on Sundays

My wife went to Lehigh. I won't judge your choice.
Regarding the parking situation, you're driving a $45k car in your teens and going to Lehigh. Buying a parking space shouldn't be a problem. Just hit craigslist and I'm sure you can find a spot, even garaged.
That being said, a lot of other freshmen will have cars but most won't and as I think someone else mentioned, you probably won't need it. The way the school is set up, walking up the hill might be a bitch, but unless you play a sport and need to get over to the athletic fields, there isn't much else you need to drive to. You can easily walk to all the buildings and off campus housing, even a grocery store and bars.
Whether you have your car or not, remember "Freshman girls, get 'em while they're skinny."

I wanted to take my car with me, but in Philly, I don't think you really need a car, Penn doesn't let first year students have cars, and a Penn parking permit is like $1200 for two semesters, so I don't think its worth it...

There's always a way for a school to give in and allow for you to have the car frosh year. You might have to go see the Dean of Students, have your parents write a letter stating why it is important for you to have a car and be able to travel home that is out of state. I was able to pull this off at St.Peter's College, I just said I needed it for work and they caved. Just press the issue, I'm sure you can make it happen

Joe!
Congrats on getting in - it's a great school if you take advantage of all that is has to offer!
You won't be able to get a spot for a car Freshman year - there just isn't enough room. If you stay w/ on-campus housing that's not a Frat, you'll also have trouble. There are a few lots and plenty of garages available just off campus though - but it'll cost $60-$100/month for a private garage.
To those who mentioned the idea - you won't be in a Frat Freshman year, so that's a moot point.
If you're itchin' for a ride, there are two of us right around Lehigh (within 5 mins), and I've got an extra car right now, so I can always 'rent' you mine when you need it
It is very convenient having a car, but as a Frosh, there's plenty to do on-campus and you won't miss the car the way you think you will. You'll also have buns of steel from walking all of those stairs on campus! I miss my buns of steel.

There is no such thing as a $45k R anymore. You'd have to find a Volvo driving crack-head if you wanted to pay over $30k for an R at this point. It is 2009, after all (2 years after the last R's were built)

To OP: Good luck in school, if you cant find a way to bring your car, take advantage of that situation and stack your paper for mods after the semester is over. It will help you study too

I totally understand that I won't necessarily miss the car when im on campus most of the time, but I have been researching how to get home, and its a huge pain in the ass that involves combinations of buses, planes, or trains to get home, which would take an entire day...I have driven straight from lehigh home twice and once straight from home there, which is why it would be convenient.
The frats at lehigh are actually all on campus, and they don't feature very much parking. I might be able to swing enough money to get a parking spot off campus, for those who live around there, how bad is the crime in bethlehem...i mean half the town seems pretty damn rough...
as far as trying to push for a spot on campus, my parents said they wont help me out with that, they said if i CAN get a spot, then they are cool with it, but they won't be proactive to procure one.
with or without the car, i doubt ill be saving much money for mods...college life is expensive! my brother has been completely broke all year haha
thanks for all the help, ill see what I can do about this. if any of you have other ideas and stuff post it up!
