I've had a second coil in a month fail on me. Two questions..

1. Is this normal and does that mean the rest of the coils (I have a V8) also are now on borrowed time?
2. Is there not a way for the mechanic to know/predict that they will need to be replaced? E.g. - similar to how brake pads can be looked at and proactively replaced before they fail

Thanks!

I'm not sure how to predict an outright failure on these things. If you were to grab the Volvo codes, you will probably see some misfires. You might go looking for flaky grounds that attach to the valve cover, particularly if you see any pattern of cylinder 2,3,5,8 or 1,4,6,7 grouping in the failures.

Lotta heat under the hood, it's possible that they're dying on their own but I might walk through the link above and check wiring just to play it safe.

Good luck.
