Okay, when it rains it pours. After resolving my braking dillema, I got the car home and the CEL came up. It threw P0455, which I found a few posts by searching here and I think I have a good understanding on what to replace to get that done.<p>However, I couldn't find anything about P0355 other than it is supposed to be a "Ignition Coil Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction". Further googling revealed that it could be related to misfiring. I replaced my plugs and wires about 8-9 months ago (10k miles). Should I replace the plugs again? How often is the suggested replacement intervals? Or is there a more permanent fix?<p>Please advice... Thanks!<br>

Re: Codes P0455 & P0355 (heavyiron)

You might just check the routing of your coil wire. It has to run right next to the breather box, not around those vacuum lines. The coil wire is just long enough to reach around them but when the motor moves, over time it will work the wire loose from the distributor. Or, it could be a bad coil.

I had the 0455 code, search my name for a thread on it. Ended up being a loose gas cap I believe.

Re: Codes P0455 & P0355 (GG820)

P0455 is Gross Evap Leak or something like that, caused by a leak in the car's evaporative emissions control. Hopefully it is the gas cap, but there's a good chance it could be something else, like one of the lines that go to the evap cannister, the cannister itself, the purge valve under the hood, or one of the evap lines that come off the gas tank. I have been trying to track down an intermittent P0455 for a couple of months now and may have to take it the dealer for the code to be read as they can pinpoint it better than an indie, or so I have read. If that doesn't work then I have read that a smoke test is in order to see if that works.

Re: Codes P0455 & P0355 (Wayne T5)

I've been dealing with p0455 also. My first indication of a problem was a gas smell after I filled the tank, not spilled gas around the cap but it would smell up the garage overnight. If I leave the tank down by a couple of gallons, I don't get the smell but may still get the 455 code. It seems I get the code more when the tank level is higher. In the past, I have been guilty of overfilling the gas tank. Would that lead to a failure of the evap cannister? You mentioned a purge valve, where is that piece and will the smell eminate from it? I would be real interested in what you find with your car.

The purge valve is attached to the drivers' side of the radiator fan shroud under the hood. I don't think that would be causing the gas fumes you are getting. I would be thinking more along the lines of a ripped evap line, cracked cannister, non-sealing gas cap, something like that, but that's just a guess. <p>I tend to get the code more often when the fuel tank is low- different than your situation. I also get a hint of gas fumes when I open the trunk, which means I could have a problem with the fuel tank, one of the gaskets, or an evap line.<p>I am learning that this code can be caused by any one of a variety of issues in the evap/ fuel system.

Am I confused or what? What I think you are calling the purge valve, is what I think controls that muchroom shaped valve sitting just over the turbo. The one that fails and lets the condensation into your sec. air pump. Does it also vent the evap. cannister into the exhaust?

Can anyone shed more light on this P0455 code? How does the evaporative system work? Is the gas tank suppose to be under negative pressure and when it's not, it sets the CEL? What is the most common fault found? Anyone?

Re: Codes P0455 & P0355 (imslovo)

I have been getting the P0455 code, on my parents '96 850, ever since the fuel tank recall work was completed (i.e. Volvo replaced the fuel tank) in the Fall of 2005. <p>This summer I took the 850 to the dealer, in Berkeley, and after completing a smoke test it was discovered that an EVAP line running off the fuel pump was cracked. Thankfully it was just the end at the pump that was cracked, so I cut off the end and have been good ever since.<p>The dealer wanted $700 in labour to drop the tank, and replace the $17 hose. <p>Have a most splendid Monday one and all <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://********************/smile/emthup.gif" BORDER="0"> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/smile.gif" BORDER="0">

Fuel system is under pressure and I find I get the code more often if the fuel tank is low. It's been a month now and no code so all is good.

What goes wrong with the gas cap? Mine looks fine. No dirt or build up. The gasket lies flat and looks good. How do you test it? If it's not the gas cap, it sounds like a smoke test may be the only solution as I can't see anything wrong. Can the cannister fail other than having an external crack and leak?

Re: Codes P0455 & P0355 (imslovo)

I use to get a wiff of gas every once in a while after parking my 98 S70 t5. I found my PO455 by removing the acess covers to the fuel pump and the fuel level and driving around for 5 or 10 minutes. The trunk really picked a lot of fumes. I work with underground gas tanks and used an LEL explosion meter to confirm something was open on top of the tank. I had a local indy shop drop the tank to find a mouse made a home on top of the tank and chewed through a hose!...Its a good feeling when the light stays out!

Re: Codes P0455 & P0355 (imslovo)

I know very little about this as I am trying to track down the cause of the same code. I think many hope it's something as simple as the gas cap gasket wearing after 10+ years but that is only one area to look at. I would imagine a mechanic would be able to test your gas cap- or save some money and just replace it. I don't know about the cannister failing- I have read that they can fail after many years of overfilling the fuel tank. I have also read about gaskets failing at the top of the fuel tank, which I think is my problem as I smell fumes in the trunk. I need to save up a few months as fixing this will be costly if the code returns. I think a smoke test is next for me too but I have also read that a Volvo dealer will be able to pinpoint the problem a little better as they have a code reader that at least narrows the problem down a little.

just got our first v70awd 98 and it is pulling the same evap code. I'm not looking forward to tracking down the problem. We have an ob2 reader.<p>I haven't had it long enough to know how intermittent it is.<br>It came on during the test drive. Figured it was just the gas cap, reset the codes. Filled the tank, reset the codes, almost 100 miles later it came on again. wash rinse repeat... only had the car a few days.<p>Does anyone know about MA inspection? If the check engine light is off at the time of inspection, will this thing pass? <br>This is our first obd2 car.

I don't know about MA's machines but in most states if you have not completed the drive cycle it will show as "not ready" when they go to do the emissions test, even if the CEL is off. You could do a search on drive cycle but it is some combination of starts, mileage, idling, etc. <p>I have not seen a CEL on mine for probably two months now. Just jinxed myself...<br>

Re: (Wayne T5)

I was down to about 4 gallons of fuel and that damn cel came on again. As usual, it came on while idling at a stop light. On the way home I filled it with gas, and tried not to overfill it but the fuel gauge read 18 gallons. In the morning, my garage smelled like oily residue. It had the smell of gas too, but my wife even commented that it didn't smell just of gas. I have a new gas cap coming but am rather dubious about it curing the problem after having that strange smell. Do you suppose the evap. can would smell oily? I see nothing to indicate leaking fuel. Where is the evaporative cannister suppose to vent? I do notice some odor inside the car.<br>JRL, surely you've dealt with this problem before. What do you know?

I got my new gas cap from fcp groton. They sent me a stat, not a genuine volvo. I've put it on and reset the cel. Keep your fingers crossed.

Re: (JRL)

1996-2000 year vehicles are allowed 2 check tests to be "NOT READY" but newer than 2000 you are only allowed 1. so if you reset it, drive it around for a bit and bring it in, you should be ok.
