I want to know what this code means.

i know it is either the O2 sensor or it could be the cat.

"catalyst system below efficiency threshold. "

has anyone with XC90 2.5 dealt with this?

how could i know if it is the cat or the O2 sensor. if so which sensor would it be?

car drives fine!

This is the generic OBD-II code that relates to the catalytic converter. You should have a shop remove the catalytic converter and O2 sensor and inspect the cat for damage or clogging. If that is fine, order a new O2 sensor which should cost about $100 (rough estimate). If the message still does not go away with a new O2 sensor, then your catalytic converter has failed. You can either purchase a new OEM one ($$$$$$ but legal in all 50 states), purchase an aftermarket replacement cat ($$, but only legal in 48 states), or get it tuned by Rica, IPD, etc and have them turn the light off for you - which I consider the cheapest and most cost-effective option.
