Brief metallic grinding noise and grindy clutch pedal feedback when engaging the clutch at lowish speeds, generally something like 3rd to 2nd or even 2nd to 1st to round a corner or make a turn. Generally intermittent but seems to happen more frequently in warmer weather. Does not occur when going up through the gears, only when coming down as noted. Search didn't really turn up anything like this but I may have missed something.

116k on my unicorn and AFAIK still on first clutch. Haven't noticed any other issues with shifting or the gears. Any suggestions on what's happening would be appreciated!

Did you say least take it to z gearbox specialist for diagnosis? Dual mass flywheel clutch kit required....maybe?

I haven't taken it anywhere yet. It's happening so intermittenly I wanted to see if it was a sign of a common and/or serious problem before proceeding further.

A bad dual mass fly wheel rattles and clangs when idling. Clutches usually slip when gone.

Looking at the symptoms again. "Only down shifts" I would suspect something like engine Mount or CV joint

So you saying one can replace these separately or advise both be replaced one go even of the one works perfectly and the other is on the start of going out?

If the flywheel is gone replace the clutch too. If just the clutch you can keep the fly wheel.

The fly wheel is expensive and you can drive a few years with a rattling one . Think about how long you want to keep the car and cost. Tough decision I know.

Thanks but I cannot seem to find the flywheel sold separately and the workshops all recommend replacing the full kit because it's one job. Where can I source the flywheel only?

My .02 - the SMF S60R performance replacement kit comes with a clutch and is 1/3-1/2 the cost of the OEM flywheel alone, not including clutch and pp. When mine goes that's what I am upgrading to, and with an SMF it won't fail like the DMF does. If you gotta do both, might as well make sure it's a problem free next 150,000mi

For what it's worth I now think this may be more likely. I have heard the scraping/grinding sound when not on the clutch at all but simply maneuvering at lower speeds. I think the clutch feedback may just be incidental.

Please explain the acronyms used and where does one purchase these items?

SMF - Single mass flywheel
DMF - Dual mass flywheel
PP - Pressure plate

Viva performance has one (from the top of my head), also check ipd!
