Hi all. Wondering if I'm losing my clutch, but its been a long time since I've had one go on me so I can't remember the sensation. Here is what is happening:
When starting up in first gear or in reverse, if I keep the RPMs low but let out the clutch too fast, I start to accelerate and then get a rumbling noise. The first time it happened I thought for a moment that I'd spun my wheels, but that is definitely not the case. Feels like the clutch is spinning, but it sort of shakes the car a bit as well. Lasts for maybe half a second and then it stops and the car accelerates again. This does not happen in other gears, nor does it happen if I take my time letting the clutch out.
FYI, mileage is very low for its age (19K) but it is almost all local driving (the car gets driven almost every day), so I don't think the mileage is indicative of clutch wear. I don't race or launch (hard).
Thanks in advance!

If you can try and pull the car from a stop in second gear, higher load on the clutch and you will know if it is shot or not. I am wondering if you have a bad throw out bearing?

Sounds like you may be describing clutch chatter? This is going to be fairly normal if trying to launch the car from very low RPM's. Not saying there isnt a problem but from what you describe sounds normal. Throw out bearing will make a bit of a whine noise and shouldnt cause any type of shudder thru out the vehicle.
The way i was always taught to test a clutch was to block the rear wheels (or just pull the ebrake tight) and launch in 5th gear. IF the cars dies then that indicates the clutch grabbed and killed the car. If not its because the clutch is slipping and is shot.

I wonder if the chatter could be any fluids on the pressure plate or if it is just the typical shudder from the clutch engaging. I havent drove a manual S40 yet but the Audi had a soft clutch from the factory and was really smooth engaging. The race clutch installed was ceramic twin disk and was uber chattery but held up to some abuse.

Re: Clutch Issue or Something Else? (ForceFed Motorsports)

I'm the original owner of the car, so this is a recent change in how things are operating. To me, that means it isn't clutch chatter or anything "normal" in how the clutch operates. It has driven just fine for 4 years and only just in the last week or so has this started happening. Any other thoughts?
Thanks!

Rumbling noises are most often caused by the DMF "Dual Mass Flywheel", they are known to retire early on "some of" these cars.
Do you hear the rumbling for half a sec also after stoping the engine in the short interval from the moment you turn the key till the moment the engine comes to a complete stop?

Hope its not flywheel related as they are rarely covered under warranty and are expensive as hell. Would have to recommend aftermarket at that point

I don't think I hear it on shutdown, but I'll listen more carefully when I get home tonight.

The car rolled off warranty 6 weeks ago.
