Everytime I start the car up and drive away, the first time I hit the brakes I hear a notable clunk coming from the passenger side wheel well. It sounds like the suspension but I guess it could be from the brake system. After the first clunk the noise will not happen again until the next time the car is started and braked for the first time.
Anyone experience this or have any suggestions.

stormchasin_racin has been a member for 566 days
c'mon you must have seen at least one post about axle ping by now. You also know that the angle gear is the most robust part on this car right?

I have seen many posts and the original owner had the problem fixed so I guess it didn't even cross my mind. looks like the first expensive thing to go wrong for me has finally happened?

one more quick question since this seems to be answered. why does this only happen on the first break of a drive? is it just that its not yet bad enough to be noticable after the first time. From what it sounds like the xc-90 bolts are the solution and is relatively easy to do by oneself. any special things or advice to fix the problem.

The fact that it only happens once per drive, and only while hitting the brakes, makes me think it could be something other than the infamous axle ping.
Find a parking garage or a parking lot with a building next to it (to reflect sound.) Put down the windows and drive slowly in 1st gear, with the clutch out, and alternate between being on the throttle and off the throttle. If the axle splines have in fact worked their way loose again, you'll hear a clearly audible "click" or "ping" sound each time you step on and off the throttle.
If you don't hear the clicks/pings under that scenario, you can probably focus your troubleshooting elsewhere.

Its not your ABS doing its "self" test is it?

Interesting: I'd noticed something recently on my car that I hadn't associated with the famous "axle ping" but I now realize may be the same thing.
Sometimes when moving forward from a stop, I can feel a very slight "kick" through the steering wheel - no noise, and I sometimes notice the same just after coming to a stop. Could this be axle ping, or something else?

The ABS does do a clicking clunk sound when the car reaches about 12mph, it can't be felt but is audible. I am just throwing out the obvious thing first before you start replacing parts.

Re: clunk in front suspension during first break of drive (850arrrsaylikepirate)

ok thanks. maybe thats what it is since it only happens on the first brake and not again until the car is started up again. The only thing that makes me wonder if something is up is ive never heard it before about 10 days ago and I usually pay attention to the car's little noises. Oh well I guess only time will tell what this noise is and if its problematic.
thanks for the posts everyone.

The ABS check is done once per drive and it does it regardless if you use the brakes or not. The check happens at about 10 or 12mph, so maybe you are experiencing something different if it only happens when you apply the brakes.
