That was my theory for awhile too, but the most recent time it happened there wasn't anyone in front of me: no exhaust from cars, no steam from sewer grates. Another theory down the drain!

Maybe check the sensitivity setting of the City safety through the audio menu... (maybe that is only available with the Adaptive cruise control)?? it might be at "short", instead of "normal". mines is set at "normal".. dunno just a thought

If you are referring to Distance Alert, it has nothing to do with City Safety. It's a system that works with the Collision Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Hey there Kelowna here again..

Grecian - question for Mr. Mitten and I - we have had 2 different challenges with the city safety, park assist and collision avoidance systems (I beg you indulgence about the terminology). It seems you are very familiar with these systems and I am wondering if you are able to provide a little more insight or suggestions for us to discuss with our dealers. You are great at correcting our terminology and the names of systems yet from the posts I have read, there is not much insight for us to figure out what is going on..

As you know I have had trouble with BLIS, park assist, adaptive cruise control.. My dealer did replace some modules (sorry I don't kno which exact ones) and I am fairly certain that the distance sensing is still not working for the full collision avoidance system ( when someone is slowed right down to turn and I am driving up to them from behind - before the lights and alerts would go off and occasionally the car would brake for me). Now I do not get any lights or alerts. The park assist chooses to work sometimes. BLIS randomly has a fit and flashes for no reason. And yes these have all occurred on normal sunny days without rain, dirt or anything to cause grief that I can see. BLIS - I have chaulked up to there being something in the lens tha moves on occasion. The other - I don't know..

Mr. Mitten - I am sorry you are having troubles too.. If I find anything out - I will post the remedy I was given..
However as I said you seem to be in the know and if you could provide some guidance, I am sure Mr. Mitten, I and others could benefit. :) Thank you.

Hi, Up until last night I loved my 2010XC60---I was driving on the highway going about 65mph and all of a sudden for no apparent reason
the car stopped, city safety activated. I could not believe we were not hit from behind. I have parked it and am waiting until tomorrow 5/9 to call the dealer. I have also had (not much) trouble with BLIS..lights just start flashing saying something is blocked and then stop flashing for no apparent reason. Dealer told me it is just a guide, you must always look before changing lanes...no kidding! Anyone else have either problem.

That's nuts...I've heard of some malfunctions in the 0-20 mph range but it's supposed to totally disable above 20 mph...sounds like a computer problem but who knows...that sucks.

It's just semantics, as it isn't any less scary which system did it.

But I bet that was the Collision Warning system and not City Safety.

Troublesome the few anecdotes of issues with tech package.

If the above happened with the car taking full control (complete stop from highway speeds), I imagine the NHTSA would be all over it once reported). If that happened to me, I wouldn't just talk to the dealer about it though...

Are we talking like full power pedal to the carpet braking or a less extreme braking?

I can only think of what would happen to me doing 120 on the Autobahn and my brakes seizing up...

Well, this appears to be a problem. Please take good notes and keep in contact with the service manager. Like anything, there can be a defect.

If you are concerned about the safety, you can go into your Sensus menu and turn it off.

We have had exactly the same problem (on a couple of occasions) in addition to other major failures after 6,500km. However Vovlo NZ claim they have updated the software in our car and this should fix the city safety issue. We'll see. They said that about the engine oil leak!

Mr. Mitten:
What has been the diagnosis and remedy to your City Safety issue?
Have you gone back to the dealer and what did they find?

My wife had the same issue with our 2011 XC60. It took over after she started to enter an intersection after being stopped at a traffic light. She proceeded forward at ~10kph and the car braked suddenly and displayed the emergency braking activated warning in the driver info centre. She was nearly rear ended by a truck behind her. We immediately contacted our dealership and they didn't have an answer right away. They checked the car out and everything was as it should be according to them. I stayed on their tails about it and after a week they got back to me with a legit answer as far as our situations went. This was in the middle of January and it was a particularly cold morning (~-30 C). There was plenty of exhaust condensate in the air and when my wife started to pull ahead she went into the exhaust cloud of the car that was in front of her. According to the dealer the City Safety system interpreted this as a metallic surface and evasive measures were taken by the car's computer. The dealer recommended we shut the City Safety system off on particularly cold days. So now when we get into the car on a really cold morning we shut it off before driving away. A bit of a pain but it's an easy fix.

Worked for me tonight(first time). I was in bumper to bumper traffic and when we started moving, the car in front of me jammed on the brakes. City Safety reacted a split-second before I did and stopped the car. Almost got rear-ended but I was impressed.

experienced problems too with auto brake collision warning

XC60 model 2010, 1 year old.
Today the car went to an automatic brake and red light collision warning while there was no danger for collision. There was a car on the other side, but on the inside side of the slight curve. Not at all in the way. The car was going underneath a bridge (but we pass there on a daily basis) and the road goes down.

This was very scary and if a car were just behind ours, a colision might have happened... for no reason.

Volvo Garage did read-out of parameters, but the sensors were all ok. They promised they would make a report for Volvo.
