European XC70s have chrome trim surrounding the windows on the side. Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the black (cheaper) trim that comes only with base models in Europe with the chrome trim? Has this been done?
This...
/IMG]
vs. this (standard and only trim in North America)
[IMG]/IMG]

Re: Chrome trim windows (rovermark)

Funny, the topic of chrome trim...
For every person who wants chrome, there's another who doesn't want it. Maybe tastes are even different depending on the country too, as I'd guess in North America, our obsession with chrome is way more than over in Europe (I have to just think back a few years how chrome wheels became oh so popular and represented bling... shudder... whoever started the fad that there`s a correlation between chrome and having money, I'd like to smack them - or the excess chrome on some motorbikes one sees, or how much it`s used on American cars... but I digress)
In Europe, on many high end cars, one can actually choose as an option to get black trim over stock chrome, presumably because it's less flashy than the chrome.
For example, (I know because I`m on those forums), since you can't choose for BMW's here to get the black trim, people go out of their ways modifying their cars to get the black trim. From covering it with vinyl to actually buying the black OEM trim from Europe and installing it. That`s how passionate they are about getting rid of it.
I, myself, am one of those who doesn't like excessive chrome on the car, as it stands out too much, and find it too much especially on a large eye catching piece like the window trim.
But I guess that`s why options exist... different tastes! I only wish we had the black option here!

I hate the chrome and it comes standard on the highest luxury level "Summum"..
Was I glad the R-Design came with a black trim
Can't be exchanged, totally different system for the chrome trim.

Well the XC70 comes here standard without chrome window surrounds. But, as Johann says, it comes standard on the highest luxury trim level in Europe.
Given that it is not available here in North America, I wonder what the reasoning for that is at Volvo - and this is contrary to what Lotus states if chrome is truly liked in North America (why did they omit it?)
x2 - Not a big fan of the chrome trim on my V70. I would have preferred the more subtle black trim.

Re: Chrome trim windows (robreed55)

I have mixed feelings. My V70 has the chrome which I feel is a better match to the silver factory roof rails; not sure how black would contrast with it.

Quote, originally posted by robreed55 »

x2 - Not a big fan of the chrome trim on my V70. Re: Chrome trim windows (rovermark)

I am expecting our new XC70 to arrive any day now after having done the OSD thing....and the question about the chrome came into my head as well.
My color is the Oyster Grey, and I for one thinks that the chrome would look better on that color scheme. It would mix well with the silver accents around the fog lights and lower strip below the doors. It sort of brightens up the car a bit.
Last time I checked, the cars displayed at volvocars.us had the chrome trim which is a bit misleading since that is not what we are getting state-side.
freezingalaskan

An Ocean Race blue XC70 with chrome surrounds and roof rails is about is nice as it gets for me... what Wallender drives in the BBC series (along with a wood steering wheel).
/IMG]

In the meantime, why don't you start by getting one of these?

And a bumper cap or two...

.
.
.
But be careful... if you go too far and start putting too much chrome on your car, I'll buy you one of these!

For 2010, the XC70 in the US will be equipped with chrome-like window surrounds per 2010 Model Year Headstart documents.

I have to say that I like a little chrome. Not too much.
I would have liked to have the chrome surrounds around the windows on my black XC70...
Thanks for your find Lotus but I think the door moldings and bumper covers are a little too much for my taste

Re: Chrome trim windows (rovermark)

The parts are a bit different but they can be exchanged. It's only a lot of work because the rubber fittings of the rear sidewindows need to be cut out and also replaced - not only because of the cutting - but also a different shape.
I heard from insiders that it will cost around 1500 euro including work at an official Volvo-dealer.
The R-design package (not available for every country) comes with black anodised aluminium windows surrounding, those are different to the standard black trims and looks pretty well like BMW's shadow-line trim.

The black trim here is the cheaper plastic rubber that function like a seal and tend to discolour and fade. Volvo not only does not offer chrome trim on the top of the line XC70 here, but acutally sells it with the cheap trim that is not worthy of a car this price.
