Make sure your getting a freight quote and not just oversized package quotes. If they try and fit a large package in the trucks the price sky rockets whereas they could just throw it on a freight shipment and it usually cheaper.

You should look into sending it through Amtrak. Sounds weird, but a friend of mine sent several pretty large and heavy boxes from Syracuse, NY to Seattle, WA for less than half the price of UPS/USPS/FedEx. The only thing is, the package has to be brought to and picked up from an Amtrak station. Still something you might want to look into: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/...d=482

I've heard greyhound does it cheap too.

Last time I shipped some bumpers I put an ad up on the craigslist rideshare section, offer a guy with a pickup or RV a few extra bucks for gas to take the thing. Last summer I shipped six bumpers and a steering rack in a guy's boat and gave him $200 to do it. From Denver to Portland.
