I replaced my secondary air pump this wekend, new Volvo unit, but I was unable to remove my current check valve with a new one.
At start up this morning, I still had the "blower" noise/whine with any sort of throttle pressure until the car warmed up.
Does the check valve make all the noise?

I can here a slight blower whine under acceleration. I just assumed this was normal, as I have been able to hear the turbo on all the other turbo cars I have owned.
Is this not normal on a Volvo? Mine has been that way the entire time I have owned it. 1 year today.

Re: (ViriiGuy)

This is definitely only while the engine is cold from overnight.
The S/V70s seem to have their own unique "sound"/drone that permeates from the engine compartment that appears to be normal.

Valve makes distinctive clapping noise, usually once in a min or so and it "comes" from somewhere behind the cluster - that's how I hear it..
Re: Check valve vs SAP - which makes all the noise ?? (Papa_Kirlo)

This noise is a deep toned, almost like a tight alternator belt causing excess strain - only on throttle do you really hear it, a slight/faint wobble sound at idle. It goes away after the car warms up.
Separately, on boost I have a high pitched turbo sound (not normal compared to other Gen 1s I've driven) Could be a chipped blade causing some sort of harmonic noise - when its on boost, it pulls strong. I need to hook up a boost gauge and see what its doing.
I see if I can record something tomorrow morning before starting it up.

I thought you were asking about the Secondary Air Pump...
That SHOULD run when the car is cold.
How come everyone keeps referring to the turbo?
I'm confused... Re: Check valve vs SAP - which makes all the noise ?? (gdogg16)

I had a SAS pump crap out on myself too. Its causes by a bad check valve but the noise i got was the SAS squeelin along. This happens because moisture builds up in the SAS PUMP after the check valve goes bad and then it starts to kill the bearings and crap in the pump itself. then it starts to rust or something and squeeling pigs are the result.
The SAS pump itself only runs for 2 min on start up to help assist in the "pre-heating" of the CAT. after 2 min it shuts off and the only other time its used again is possible after a long drive if your sitting at a light or something it might pop on real quick.
Once the Check valve goes to crap the sas pump can start to get moisture or liquid build up and eventually kills the pump. Im not sure what a bad check valve sounds like but in general if the check goes to crap so will the SAS. Becasue mine was a bad SAS due to moisture it created this horrible squeeling / grinding noise. (when i first heard it i almost died because i thought i killed the turbo or something). People have a technique of resolving this after they replace the SAS and check valve. They drill a hole at the dead bottom of the pump so that if there is any possible moisture or liquid in there it can drain out the bottom.

Re: Check valve vs SAP - which makes all the noise ?? ([email protected])

Well - its definitely not the SAP - so I'm guessing my SAP was good all along
I unplugged the SAP, goosed the throttle and the noise was still there. It sounds as though its coming from the passenger side - sometimes its hard to determine where harmonic noises eminate but that's where it appears.
So, what does that leave me with that would quiet down as it warms up?
- Alternator?
- a belt tensioner?
- a belt rubbing against something?
I recorded a video clip and will try to get it uploaded today.

Here's a Quicktime video clip, you can hear it more towards the end of the clip when giving it some gas - around the 25 second mark.
the clip (4mb)

Go to your local drugstore and buy a cheap stethoscope, should be around 9 bucks. Use that to narrow down the location of the noise. If you know where it is coming from, it will be easier to identify.
JRL, Quicktime will play it, pretty much any media player except for the horrid Windows Media player or Real Media, will play it.
