******UPDATE********

Started this post before I was ready....

So I am looking to get rid of the head unit(radio) lol.

My roommate in college is a freaking electrical computer wiz. As am I...just not on the programming side.

He came up with the great idea of building my own tablet pc/media device including a screen and a mini computer so this will be in the works this fall in between my studies (LOL).I will keep this post update as soon as I have more information to show. Some basic parts for my build will be posted someone tonight if not tomorrow morning.

Objective:
-Create a screen and mini computer that will enable me to have full control over iPhone with USB connections for other media.
-Navigation
-OBD2 access
-and much more!

Basically for starters rough build sheet

Very nice. Too bad i have an 04. Also how would you keep sound processing, or is that even possible?

that's pretty cool looking. I know once you remove the HU there is a lot of space behind the actual dash so a mini PC would totally be doable, maybe even one of those mini-android flash OS computers :)

Added in :) thanks for the Idea.
You could just either buy the newer slim DICE units or just open the huge ass original DICE case and make it more "slim" lined and mount/hide it behind the dash itself. The wheels are turning my friend :D

Mini computer states "add your own hard drive" so you need to budget something in for that... ssd would be my call.

Saw a link for it a couple months ago on Aliexpress, now I can't seem to find it :( maybe I was mistaken. Could always just use a USB hub and mount it somewhere in the dash and just plug and play whatever USB powered devices you wanna add.

How you looking to outputting audio from the mini-pc? Looking at the audio out on the mini-PC looks like it's only HD 3.5mm line-out so you might need a 3.5mm to RCA wire to hook up to the stock amp (aftermarket wire radio to amp)

If you look at the screen. The screen has all the connections on the back. I haven't finalized anything. Simply an idea was thought of and we came up with prospective parts list. The list will hopefully change from this day to the finish date.

Food for thought:

http://www.audioquest.com/usb_digital_analog_converter/dragonfly-dac

It's a miniature USB-based Digital Audio Converter. You would run it off of your carputer's USB port, and it would take over all audio functions. You would then 3.5mm to RCA it into your amp. This would be a great solution if you want to get the best sound quality out of your digital files.

If you need one, shoot me a PM.

I would look for an older laptop which you can gut and then reuse the battery so that it can hibernate and resume everytime you start the car, waiting for the system to boot up sucks.

A full laptop notebook should be much faster than that mini PC you are looking at, which only has an Atom 1.1Ghz processor. Running a multitude of USB devices require processing power that the Atom may not have.

Though with a ssd and minimal boot screen startup could be anywhere from 6-10 seconds! So I don't think that That bad :) all food for thought though. Trial and error Til it's perfect

Right, but that's just loading Windows 7, then you'll need to run that Infotainment software which will be another 5-6 seconds at the least. Not a big deal, but along with all those chained USB periperals and drivers, I would be willing to bet it'll be 30-40 secs start up from post up all the way until you can use the infotainment software.
