Check Engine Light '05 XC

So, my wifes 05 XC with 75k on the clock has an issue.

Back in December I was driving the car. It was 25-30deg. I came out of the store & the car started ok, but I noticed the headlights & int light was fluctuating (diming slightly). Car ran ok, within 5 miles my CEL came on, car still ran ok. Message was check engine management syst.

Took it to my independent Volvo mech & he reset the code, but he said the code didn't say exactly what it was?

So a couple of weeks go by & one really cold 0 deg night the light comes on again & I drive it home. The lights seem to be diming again. It seems as thought the idle is low & fluctuating around 600 rpm.

I park the car in the driveway & go out a while later to start it & it's dead.
I jump it & it starts, of course the light is still on.

Back to the shop. Battery is orig; so we through a new one in & reset code.

Car runs fine for 3-4 weeks & then the light comes on again, no fluctuating lights.

Shop determines it's the air mass meter, $375 later & on our way.

A week later the light comes on again. Shop checks it out & finds a vacum hose under the manifold had a crack in it? $25 charge.

So, a month or so later (last weekend) I'm coming back from a road trip. Tooling down a long hill, 50deg, & the CEL comes on again. Stop at drive though coffee & idle is low again. Just under 1/2 tank of gas. Car is running OK otherwise, so continue 200 miles home.

Stop at shop on way home & they read the code, fuel code or something like that, supposidly not the same as the air mass code.

He says to use major brand fuel, I was using local independent + fuel. I had filled up after the light came on with Sunoco ++.

2 days later & CEL again! Shop replaces air mass & light stays off for 2 hrs; back on..

What the heck?

I have been using this shop for 10+ years & has always been good. I purch the car from him with 50k & this is the first issue I have had.

So, scheduled to go into shop this Weds.

p.s. could a voltage fluct be causing this? I haven't had any battery/charging issues, diming lights, but it's been warm.

Sorry I don't have more info on the specific codes, but it always says check engine management system.

Any thoughts woudl be apprec.

Stop throwing money at it, and bring it into a Volvo dealer.

They have a much more advance diagnostic computer specially designed for Volvos. It will tell them EXACTLY what's going on instead of just the code. In other words, the fault code is a umbrella code for many codes, the Volvo computer can read those other "smaller" codes.

^^^^Indeed^^^^

For fun, can you get a hold of a scan tool to tell us what codes are being set?

You you damn well all you will get are genreric codes and it cannot read all the Volvo stored or sub codes
Re: (JRL)

True, but by EPA regulations all of the engine management codes that affect emissions must conform to OBD-II standards and be readable with independent equipment.
