I looked up the code, and it said "EVAP Emission Control System Leak(Large)." I am thinking that the smell of petrol is coming from the gas cap, and my father confirmed this when he returned home from the grocery this afternoon. Would a faulty gas cap throw this code? If not, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: check engine code PO455 appearing on the '96 850 (JRL)

Thanks JRL! I am going to head off to the Volvo dealership first thing tomorrow morning and get a new gas cap. Hopefully this will rectify the problem. I checked my parent's 850 service history, and as far as I can discern the gas cap is the original-so either way, it probably would be advantageous for me to purchase a new one.
I did some research and someone had suggested that perhaps the purge valve on (or somewhere very close to) the radiator could need cleaning or be replaced. If the gas cap doesn't do the trick, then I will investigate this lead further. Have a most wonderful Sunday one and all

Re: check engine code PO455 appearing on the '96 850 (1sciroccofahrer)

My parents just returned from the north coast of California, and my father rang to inform me that the check engine light came on after filling up the tank with petrol and hitting a rather big bump in the road. I plugged in the scanner, and the PO455 code was once again rearing its ugly head When the code appeared about a month ago I replaced the fuel cap, as well as the fuel filter(for no other reason then I couldn't ascertain through the service records when it was last replaced), and when the car was up on the lift I noticed that two of the fuel vapor lines by the fuel filter were broken, so I picked up new line and replaced that as well. The car has been driven close to 1,000 miles since and the cel didn't come back on until now. I erased the code, and will see what happens in the coming days. Any further suggestions would be, as always, greatly appreciated. Thanks

Modified by 1sciroccofahrer at 9:29 PM 8-15-2006

Re: check engine code PO455 appearing on the '96 850 (1sciroccofahrer)

My father just informed me that when he would take the gas cap off, it didn't appear to be under pressure. He can't pinpoint it exactly to when the fuel tank was replaced under recall last fall, but believes the pressure issue arose around then-even though a check engine light related to PO455 didn't appear until this summer. Have a wonderful evening
p.s. I should also state the car has no problems starting, and is running excellenty-disregarding for the moment the cel

Looks like the purge valve is going to get a closer look

Take it out and blow in it...there's a directional air lock attached to the hose that goes to it. Air should only go in one direction. Could be as simple as that, but doubt it.

thats because your father is not putting the gas cap on correctly..leaving the gas cap loose or installing crooked cross-threading will trip a evap code...i say this because you claim he just put gas in the car.

I will make sure that he puts a little more effort in ensuring that the cap is put back on in a proper manner Have a most wonderful weekend one and all
