Changed my timing belt - tensioner problem

I just changed the timing belt on my 99 S70GLT. It was not a very difficult job, except for the unexpected problem I had with the spring tensioner. I set the tensioner (moved it to the right past the window, then back), put the indicator in the middle of the window, then I turned the crank by hand a turn, then checked it again. It was off a bit, so I decided to set it again.
This turned out to be a major mistake.
When I loosened the bolt I heard a snap and the tab/ear on the back of the tensioner bent. I thought I had a bad part, so had a new one shipped to me. Same thing happened. I removed it, straightened the tab with pliers, and reinstalled it.
Motor starts and runs great, but I have no idea what went wrong with the tensioner and if I am taking a risk leaving it in.
Is this tensioner supposed to be set just once?
