Okay so for the last few months of R ownership I have been plagued with this problem and I had narrowed it down to the crappy roads we have and ongoing road construction on I-80 toward San Fran.
The symptom, every time I drive on harsh roads, massive potholes, dips etc that cause sudden joints and rapid movement to the car the R throws a CEL. I then proceed to run the Soft loader diagnostics software to read the codes and I get
ECM-400C Fuel Tank System Leakage.
Now this happens on a full, half and even 3/4ths tank of fuel.
I’m not sure what is causing this.
So I was thinking of taking it in to the dealer (since I thought I read up here that there was a service bulletin for this issue), but I am concerned about my MTE software. Will they reflash the ECU and overwrite the soft loader or will it remain the same?
I plan on contacting IPD( after contacting the previous owner and he recommended this) to see if they have run into this issue before and the proper course of action to take.
Have any of you guys experience these symptoms and what did you do to rectify the issue?
Evan

Re: CEL Fuel System Leakage... ongoing problem (Token Blk Guy)

There is a TNN on this issue and new Software was introduced to minimize the the false Check Engine Codes. Mainly its due to a software algorithm that determines whether or not there is a leak in the EVAP system. What they didn't account for in the original software was the wear of the diagnostic leak pump.
So if you bring it in, its likely your tune software will be overwritten with the newer updated ECM software to address this issue.
I had this issue on my car when I first got it and software did not fix the issue. I pretty much new it wouldn't but that is the warranty process on the order of repairs. If you don't get the software first, warranty will not pay for other repairs.
After appeasing my service manager that all the cheap fixes had been done, software, gas cap, etc., he let me replace the Diagnostic Leak Pump. Mine was the older style that was snapped together and tended to have leaks. Mine was replaced at about 18K miles. I only have 29K on the clock so far.

Re: CEL Fuel System Leakage... ongoing problem (Oceans60R)

Thanks Ocean
I was affraid of that. I dont want to loose the software that i have but i also am tired of resetting that light pretty much anytime I drive on the crappy roads we have around here. I talked to Ken from IPD today and he told me i dont have an warranty option since i am not the original purchaser of the softloader. So im going to assume if it is overwritten i would have to purchase the software all over again. He also said it might be more of a hassle than worth to actually go to the dealer and have this resolved. idk ill think about this some more.

Wow that sounds pretty bogus on IPD's part. You'd figure the software is married to the car, not married to the purchaser.

Re: (firehawk618)

My car has been having the same problem, its been very intermittent. Volvo says the CEL has gone off 6 times in the past 105 drive cycles. They did a smoke test and the system passed and then they replaced the valve for the leak pump first to see if that fixed it and that worked for a while until the CEL came on the other day. Looks like I'll have to be replacing the the pump for $250
Thanks guys for the info!

They should have the file that IPD sent them for the orginal tune, if they could e-mail it to you your would be OK to reinstall if necessary

I'm not familliar with the IPD system, but can't you store the tune on the softloader, then upload it back once it's been overwritten?

Contact LUCKY - he'll set you up. They keep archived copies of the stock code you upload to them. Now, the bigger question is do you have the PC harness and the CD? If you have those, then work with Lucky to get your older stock tune sent back to you, then revert back to stock...and then arrange w/Lucky to update your tune once you re-read your new ECU code.
Re: CEL Fuel System Leakage... ongoing problem (Short Circuit)

Hum okay is Lucky at IPD?
I have all the original parts and CD, and I actualy talk with the orginal owner frequently. Ken told me that since i was not the original owner of the software there wasnt much that he could do as far as getting me the orginal software...
I havent had the issue show up again for quite some time now.
So let me get this straight..
IPD gives you a code to install to send to the ECU for teh tune.
Then you use the softloader software to insall the various stage upgrades..
If the dealer overwrites this code you have to get it again from IPD or is the software still on the ECU?
Is it like reformatting a computer?
