hey all,
I searched, but couldn't find what I was looking for...
For the past few days, my CD player has really been acting up. For some burned cd's, it sometimes skips as if the cd is scratched, but it's brand new. Other times, it will say the cd is "unreadable" when it worked 20 minutes before.
I jut accept these problems when it comes with burned cd's, but today I put in a real cd (Phil Collins Greatest Hits, to be exact) and it was "unreadable", so I switched to a burned cd and it worked fine.
The cd player is acting very erratically, and I hope it's not a symptom of a larger problem. Anyone else experience this?

I've had similar problems with my CD player and burned disks. I had my car in for my 7500 service on Saturday and asked if there was a fix...I was told that it happens with some burned CDs and the only fix is to avoid using those CDs. Pretty lame. I was hoping for a software update or something, but no luck.

Re: cd player acting up!? (Dygitalpmp)

My cd player in my 2005 doesn't play burned cd's whatsoever. It used to play them as you say where it would skip and skip like the cd was scratched until I skipped to about the 6th song on the disc them it would play a couple of tracks and then go back to skipping.
I asked my dealer about it and all they said was we tried a real cd that we had and it worked fine. They said it's not made to play those burned cd's. I went out a week later and bought the Harmon Kardon Drive + Play and had it hard wired and hooked into the antenna lead and now I have 3000 songs at my fingertips. And will never touch the cd player again since I haven't bought an actual music cd since I was in 6th grade.
There is no fix if it doesn't play burned cds then your stuck.

There are some tricks to Volvo CD players:
First off some do and some don't play burned CDs. I thought that these new players do but apparently they suffer from the same issues as the old Sc-901 generation players.
In order to play burned CDs you need to buy the kind of CD-R that finalizes after you burn it. The box will say specifically that they do. Most CD-Rs can be added to once burned...not changed just added to. The kind you need can not.
Try Maxell CD-R Music Pro cds. They will work.
Hope that helps
Oh and also use a CD lens cleaner once in a while.

after the scenario of headunits eating cds never to be seen again, i never use original cds...
i use the spindle ones infiniti usually and they work fine
having said that, the other day it just skipped and jumped tracks but i think this is not even the cd at fault as when i went into the radio, it was changing stations automatically.
i realised that the tuning knob was not "settled" and ever so slightly to the right... so as i drove, it would skip to the right or left and so change tracks or change stations.

My 2006 is finnicky with burned CD's as well. I've found the following works best for me:
- Experiment with CD brands. I've found TDK is no good, Memorex seems to work.
- Use "Disc at Once" burning method and finalize the CD.
- Use slower burning speeds (like 8x or less)
Using these steps I haven't had any problems yet.

Re: cd player acting up!? (heil)

I have the same problem with my V50 and burnt CDs. I can play them in my $30 portable CD player but the cd player in my $28,000 car can't handle them. I sure am glad that Volvo has tied their audio system in so tightly with the rest of their systems that we can't go with an aftermarket head unit.

Quote, originally posted by heil »

There is no fix if it doesn't play burned cds then your stuck.

This seems to be Volvo's attitude about a number of things.

Re: cd player acting up!? (v50t5black)

We had the "Deck Error" on ours that was replaced under warranty.
The head unit was sent back to sweden to get our Five CD's out that were still jammed inside. Supposedly if Volvo finds signs of Burned CD use that caused the Deck Error, this repair wouldn't be under warranty.
The unit was sent out on Jan 4. We Still haven't gotten our CD's back.

An Aside note: Our shuffle is finicky. We shuffle all discs, and it stays with the Barenaked Ladies: Everything to everyone for about 4 songs. You manually go up a cd or down a cd, it would play that one song off the other cd, then go back to the barenaked ladies disc to play more songs. All cd's were inserted at the exact same time, and there are songs on other discs that have not played yet. (i know the unit likes to hit every song once on shuffle)
I suppose I should be happy it likes the CD, or the BNL. go fig.

Re: cd player acting up!? (v50t5black)

I, and a colleage also, both have problems with some CDs in different players - our different cars, our cheappo boom boxes, and even our mid-priced home stereo units. We tried many different things - burn at 4x speed, different make blanks, etc. We could not find a pattern. We have concluded that the CD burning process is marginal, and not so consistent.
But, I've used about 45 home-burned CDs in my S40 - with zero problems. So I would have to say the Volvo CD unit is better that the average CD player.
(Sorry to say that to those of you who have problems; I seriously sympathize with your pain)
