Re: CASTROL IMPORT MUTI VEHICLE IS NOT JWS 3309 SPEC'd (Q-Ship)

Don't jump to a hasty conclusion here. Castrol's online data sheet begs to differ. I suggest that you contact them and ask for an explanation of the discrepancy.
FYI to all readers, Mobil has reformulated their Mobil 1 ATF to make it JWS 3309 compliant. This happened sometime in the latter half of '08, best I can tell. Be advised there may be old stock on the shelves which is not, so read the labels before you buy.

According to Castrol it is.....Castrol's reply to my inquiry below
Thank you for contacting Castrol North America,
Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF is now OK to use for Volvo 5-speed models.
Originally we did state the our Import Multi-Vehicle ATF may be used in all Volvo's (except for 5-speed) but later our supplier gave us an update and said it was OK for use in Volvo 5-speed's as well.
Castrol's PDS for the product has been updated to reflect this although due to prior distribution of our fluids, some bottles may not reflect this updated information however the product is approved.
Castrol Consumer Relations
Who's their supplier? I thought they were the supplier??
I would still email them back and ask "are you not manufacturing this stuff yourselves?" Of course, there is only one answer to that question, but we can still have fun.
Maybe their supplier is Mobil. I can say one thing, at the prices they are selling it at, someone is making some money.

If so then I'm off to the Toyota dealer, there's enough of them....
I also asked Castrol if the product was always useable, or if there may be some old stock out there that would not be in spec- they said
"The formulation has always been usable, it was just not approved.
Due to prior distribution of our fluids, some bottles may not reflect this updated information however the product is approved.
Castrol Consumer Relations"

Yes Toyota dealer.
IT'S A TOYOTA for God's sake.
They can't charge a premium for tranny fluid, no one would buy it from them!
It's not expensive fluid, you buy a case at about $5.00 a bottle from Mobil.
It's only VOLVO who adds $10 to a bottle for their re-labeled stuff

Mazda & Ford also sell the relabeled 3309 and, last I checked two years ago, the Ford package was under $4/qt. Don't have a clue as to what it is now...
Re: CASTROL IMPORT MUTI VEHICLE IS NOT JWS 3309 SPEC'd (MrTippy)

Well I tried to get the castrol Rep to show his/her hand. In a roundabout way asking if they get any component of their fluid (base stock or modifiers) from mobil. I guess that will never happen.
hope he/she's not a SS'er....if you are forget you read this...move along nothing to see here.

Re: CASTROL IMPORT MUTI VEHICLE IS NOT JWS 3309 SPEC'd (Q-Ship)

Mobile makes a multi vehiclefluid that specifies 3309 compliant. Wonder if Castrol is getting it from them? I had posted about this maybe 6 months or so ago, and one of the members said the viscosity for the MV was less than the 3309. I just bought 2 cases of the Toyota type 4 last Thursday and paid $3.39 a quart. I thought the clerk made a mistake, but she said gave me a discount. Vacaville, CA Toyota, for anyone in the area.
Jerry
