Depends a lot on the quality of the VGA cable and the quality/signal strength of the VGA output on the video card. You could try going to VGA over CAT5 with adapters...

Crazyace, any reason why you didn't just do HDMI?
The screen only has a VGA out put in the back, rendering me to use that. I Was going to give a gold VGA cable a try hoping for more of a solid connection. I will look into cat5 cable idea

Is he just hooking into the data feeds the VIDA/DICE exposes somehow, or is he going lower level?
I'm quite curious... would you share the app?
Even though I don't plan on doing this sort of install, it would be nice to have some better software for monitoring stuff on a laptop that I could bring along when desired...
It's an app you can purchase with the centra fuse program. Simple obd2. T will read parameter and codes...let you clear them and also tell you what try are.

Thanks for your options ;) my sound issues are resolved via two ground loops.

Only issue left is the screen.

-rolling lines.
-dull color

I believe This is due to the length of the VGA cable
Back when I used to install KVM systems I remember that we could remote SVGA display cables as long as 16 feet by installing an RF Choke between the cable and the video source. I don't expect the display side to pick up RF noise.

are you saying to throw a couple RF Chokes in the middle of the line to see what happens?

You cannot get oil/pressure...yet ;) my guy is gonna do some more programming and see if he can sneak in some more parameters :) which, actually he is doing right now! :)

As far as fitment for an 04...the screens are for 05-07 . Seeing how the console is different. So you would have to source and potentially make your own screen.

-Connor
For the 2004s
You can always get one of these :

Or buy the actual Volvo part: 8684591

Then get a Lilliput monitor:

I have to say, I had the pleasure of driving with Connor this weekend, car's tight and the "Carputer" as he put it was a well executed piece of electronics. Very impressed, wish I had the time and money to put this on my "Soonly to be completed Mods" list, however, it just is not in my cards for the time being.

Overall, Great sound, great picture, love the interface as well as media compatibility.

OH, and the idea that with a little bit of 3G magic you could potentially navigate various porn sites on google chrome whilst driving.

I think this is absolutely awesome!! I'd like to attempt something similiar in my R. The only thing I'm not 100% in love with is the nav interface. Is there a way to run a headless Garmin unit as oposed to the built in nav?

Why did you give up on the Steering Wheel adapter? That sorta breaks the deal for me going to a CarPC.

The increase in audio performance of an aftermarket alternative makes up for losing the center speaker and wheel controls. HU-803 is trash compared to my 2din.

I don't see what your argument is about. A CarPC wouldn't have much edge over the HU-803 unless you got what AthruC suggested. If you are using the onboard sound via stereo jack(2.1?), it would be an inferior sound quality as opposed to the stock Dolby ProLogic Surround. Not having a center speaker and wheel controls is to me is less, not more. I have an IMIV along with my HU-803 that mates with my Iphone 4, which I find is a perfect mesh. Unless this system supersedes this in functionality, I can't see myself building a carPC just yet.

It has to do with the equilizing properties within an aftermarket alternative, run your sound system next to mine and without the center speaker the quality is > the stock system any day of the weak, rain or shine.

The CarPC alternative is even greater as the information you are able to receive from Centrafuse is amazing, eliminated the need for a handheld diagnostic tool. I agree with you when it comes to quality coming from an audiojack but you could easily run a usb connector or simply a usb plugged directly into the PC itself. Only issue I say with Connor's was the lack of HDMI which can easily be upgraded in due time.

I don't know what the love is with the center speaker. I have mine almost turned completely off. With the radio settings at stock, it's too strong in the mids and too much in your face.
Boom goes the dynamite.

I think you guys are missing the point.

Here's my analysis and conclusion, I would only deem an aftermarket or carPc as an upgrade over the stock system under these circstances(my requirements).

1) better sound quality, in terms of amplification, speaker control and surround system support. Under what I gather so far, aftermarket din only support 4 point or 6 point sound systems unless you replace all the OEM speakers to their branded tweeters and subs. Minus the ability to control the OEM amplifier, it may be true that a aftermarket head might have better equalizers, but with the lack of speaker and spatial control, that does not equate to more superior sound.
2) ease of use and speed; this includes volume controls, power-on time and convenience(steerin wheel support)

All other functions are bonuses and welcomed assets; which includes CarPc functionality, onboard engine analtysis and what not.
