So I am looking to get rid of the head unit(radio) lol.

My roommate in college is a freaking electrical computer wiz. As am I...just not on the programming side.

He came up with the great idea of building my own tablet pc/media device including a screen and a mini computer so this will be in the works this fall in between my studies (LOL).I will keep this post update as soon as I have more information to show. Some basic parts for my build will be posted someone tonight if not tomorrow morning.

Objective:
-Create a screen and mini computer that will enable me to have full control over iPhone with USB connections for other media.
-Navigation
-OBD2 access
-and much more!

Basically for starters rough build sheet

-Aftermarket harnesses

Sourced aftermarket cable at best buy(crutchfield has them as well for $12.99)

ebay links wont hold so its a aftermarket radio to factory amp harness

-Direct fit double din LCD screen

-Mini computer(looking for cheaper option)

-Steering wheel controls
going to lose them :( NO bid deal

I will find another sources :)

-Bluetooth

two 16ft 3.5mm audio cables with a 3.5mm to rca adapter for each cable.

Radio Removal:

Test fit

for a couple weeks :(

Computer install:

Computer mounting in trunk onto fabric wall:

holes cut for wire

Clleaaannnn

Final wiring

Finallly at last!

Short youtube clip of boot time into the program....( DevolvR please pay attention to the timing and the $20 bet we had ;) )

So all in all it was a fantastic experience of sweat blood and tears(when **** didnot work out)

Everything works......to a point

I am struggling with two issues which I hope to iron out in the next week. This is what they are

-I made a boo boo and wired the power wires next to the audio wires which is causing a great deal of static whenever the car is on....I will rewire and it should go away...should it not go away, I will be looking into ground loop isolation solutions.
-Second issues is the power coming from the car is noisy. Exploring a few options to potentially fix this problem with no further work!

Well hope you guys enjoyed and feel free to leave your comments and concerns!

Overall cost was around $1k give or take a few hundred. I am completely happy and once the noise issue has been addressed itll be a solid done deal!!!

ENJOY!

P.S. DevolvR ...PM me for my paypal :)

I don't think the bet is legit anymore CrazyA, He said booting an OS with an Atom processor not an i3 :D

Looks pretty sweet. Might have to run the wires on the opposite side of the car (power down one, audio down the other) to relieve some noise/static issues.

Which is what I plan to do.....only thing is this....what about the giant stack of factory wires on the drivers side? That shouldnt affect the audio? Or ?

could you check your links to your parts and stuff? Most of them don't work... This is a really cool mod, btw... the only thing I would have done differently was to mount the cpu in the wheel well instead of in the trunk. Is there any reason why you mounted it exposed?

FIXED!

no reason...just more ease of access should anything need to be changed out or switched out....also not 100% sure it would fit behind with the fuse box there! though the other side may have worked! I like seeing the computer and I am not afraid of it getting bumpedddd....or so I say now ;)

Will have to drive and do some more testing....but I'm going with no. The case has so many holes. And it being only an I3...should not see any issues

Shouldn't be too much of a problem, most amps sit in the trunk in stereo systems and have built in fans (like the mini-pc does) and they do the trick. Worse cause, just drop the back seats for more air flow :D

I'm guessing that with XP and the current SSD technology that it's just insanely fast. Some ideas for you though, turn off Bios post information, and it would be cool to change the boot up windows XP logo to either a Volvo or an R logo.

And since im a man of my word, Looks like Beer is on me for you and your bud. Awesome! Pm me your email.

Are your new wires shielded at all? If your getting a ground loop in the video or a buzz in the audio? I would check on where you tapped in for power and where you put your ground wire. I would also step by step unplug everything you plugged in before you get to power and ground.. In my days when when I traveled with the bands as a monitor engineer. The best thing to do is to follow the signal flo.. if your already done with he install go in reverse order of the installation and do not skip a step at all dont go right to the middle.. If you do this you will eventually hit your problem... But what you shoulda done is test the system step by step while you where installing it.. This way you would of found your problem at step 8 let's say instead of step 50..

They are not shielded....but I will be moving the audio cables to the other aide of the car today. Should that not fix it...I'll go through it all

Bump! Nice boot speed (as expected) :)

I like DevolvR's ideas on turning off POST display (I assume you already have it set to 'Quick'). On most Bios systems there is a register overlay space for writing a "cover logo" to display over the top of the POST display. I also like DevolvR's idea of changing the XP boot logo to an R logo. Even if you only display an 'R' for a quick second, flashing an 'R' would add nice finishing touches to the 'R' theme of the caR.

Yea! I love his ideas and any others you guys have. I'll look into it once everything is running solidly. I still hv to install obd2 and stuff :)

This is going to be so awesome when you've worked out all the bugs. Onboard diagnostic capabilities and code reading is worth the entry fee alone.

So what is behind the screen where the radio used to be. It seems you've moved all the pc guts to the trunk :D

And you should definitely "set up shop" for fellow SSers who want something similar ;)

pretty much the screen has a double din layout with like a bulge in the back...which you could cut out....pretty much mimics the size of a normal double din radio..otherwise the only thing behind the dash is wiring....all guts have been routed in the trunk...which makes a very very clean install :)

I would be more than happy to do installs for who ever is willing. Definitely a one day install session assuming all the parts are present :)

Very cool - I've been thinking about installing a Mac Mini with a SSD as a car entertainment 'server'. It could hold a big library of music, movies, etc. and interface with our 'home sharing' library via WiFi when I pull into the driveway. En route, it could be accessed by the various devices (iPads, iPhones, etc.) the kids use or output directly through the amplifier (bonus: it has an 'optical out' jack that wouldn't be susceptible to electrical interference). Or perhaps that is overkill these days, and all I really need is a good direct interface for the various "i" devices. The "Aux in" on my '07 seems to work well.

Of course, even cheaper for those who are savvy, have you considered the Raspberry $25 computer-on-a-card solution?

Your not running 1000s of watts some doubt it's the wire run making the problem.. Be specific on the problem? Is their a line on the video screen that rolls up and down? As far as audio is it a buzz? When your In park a rev the gas does the noise get louder? Let I said if you want help be specific..

Thanks for your options ;) my sound issues are resolved via two ground loops.

Only issue left is the screen.

-rolling lines.
-dull color

I believe This is due to the length of the VGA cable

What is the refresh rate for the screen? Make sure the video output from the CPC is set at the native resolution and refresh rate of the installed screen.
