Over the years, Memorial Day And Labor Day have become my traditional car detailing days. Here's a report...
Last winter I installed a frost-proof hot/cold water spigot in my garage. I've since upgraded with a ceiling-mounted retractable hose reel. I originally did this because although I normally hand-wash my cars, I could not do so in the depths of Chicago's winters and had to expose my wheels to the dangers of car wash rails.
Well, I'm happy to report that the solder burns have healed reasonably well and I KNOW my smoke detectors are in good working order.
I would also like to report that having hot and cold water in your garage has unexpected benefits besides keeping your car clean in winter.
Top Ten Reasons for Having Hot/Cold Water in Your Garage
10. You can wash the dog without giving him hypothermia
9. In my case, I can now wash the cars with soft water (no water spots!)
8. You can wash the car after the sun has gone down (don't have to wait for the weekend anymore)
7. You can wash the car in complete shade (this is a huge advantage!)
6. The radio can remain on the shelf and be played at reasonable volumes while washing (neighbor factor)
5. If you have a hose reel dedicated to the garage, you no longer have to wrestle with the flower-watering attachments and such that your wife insists on using
4. The garage floor is generally cleaner than the driveway, so there's less worry about picking up a stone if you drop a washcloth or towel
3. Your garage floor gets washed regularly
2. You don't have to move the car if you want to use the vacuum, the air compressor, etc.
And finally...
1. You are several steps closer to the beer in the fridge

Re: Car Washing Goodness (Dyno)

I nominate you for the most anal car detailer of the year. An award it seems like you will be happy to accept.
A retractable hose reel in the celing? Damn, that's going pretty far. Does it have one of those fancy arms that keeps the hose from dropping straight down onto your car? I am serious here.
I was very dissapointed not to be able to install a hot tap in my garage when our house was just built. Of course, there is no way they would have put a drain in for me, so it would have meant having to wash the car outside. It goes on the "next house" list...it's amazing all the stuff you learn about what you want and don't want when you build a house.
Pics please.

You are my hero (seriously - not trying to be obnoxious). I have the hot & cold water spigot in my garage as well but you truly are obsessed!

Regards,
Derek

Forget all the people that tell you you're OCD just because you want to wash the car year round. I have hot/cold water in the garage, and I also rigged-up a whole curtain system I designed myself. I used PVC pipe and clear shower curtains, and I have one of those floor mats with a raised lip on the floor too. My neighbors laugh at me obsessing over the car. I laugh at them obsessing over their lawns. We're all crazy about something.

Is that you? I thought we were through with this argument. I've already explained that NO, I'm not trying to "escape" from you and the kids. And NO, I am NOT trying to turn the garage into some "men's club" where I can hide from my husbandly duties like cleaning the kitchen and vacuuming the living room. I am doing this FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE FAMILY! Can't you understand that??!!

Modified by Dyno at 9:57 PM 5-30-2006

Nor did she break into my account.
I am glad that my father in law taught my wife that it's much better to hand wash than go to the drive through wash. Saved me a lot of explaining.
A hint....have the kids help you. Although I have found that it's a full time job trying to keep them from wacking the car with the end of the hose!
