Alright brotheRs, I have my R up at school this spring (3hrs away from home and my dealership) and recently had to make the trip back to replace a tire due to the all-to-frequent "bubbling perelli problem." Made the drive back up here with out any problems and then today, as part of my daily ritual when class is over, took the car out for a spin. I get on the on ramp, and my steering wheel starts shaking, or shimmy, whatever suits you best. Keeping in mind that I just had a tire replpaced, and this was not a problem two days ago, what the hell is going on with my car. As a final note the problem did start to subside once I drove it more, however it did not go away entirely. (if i have to go back home to fix this im going to be livid)

If you only replaced one tire, perhaps Haldex issues since tread depth is not even?

The tire is either out of balance, AND/OR they did not install the tire correctly onto the hub (like the lugs are not turned to spec/torque).
Dangerous both ways! Get it fixed!
I am thinking the tires have flat spots from sitting or one of the wheel weights fell off.

Haldex being electronic can handle as much as 5/32's difference in tread depth.
I'd say either tire out of balance or defective tire. Take it back to the tire shop and have them check the balance/condition of both front tires.

There have been instances where the torque wasn't correctly set from the factory, and the tech didn't check it, and then a wheel literally came off during a test drive.

Why are you asking US?
YOU have the car and YOU know exactly what's going on. All you get here is a bunch of armchair quarterbacks And NEVER a good idea to replace just one tire, especially in the front unless the other has less than 2000 miles on it

If I read your post correctly, you said that the tire was replaced at home, and then you drove back to school and on this trip the car was fine. It wasn't until the next day that the problem showed up. For me, that rules out some things like an out of round tire, or a tire with a flat spot from sitting around. Make sure no mud or snow has accumulated on your wheels. Inspect your tires for any damage. Check the depth of tread to see how close they are. If all this fails, take the car to a volvo place or reputable tire place and have them check it out. oclv

If the problem has a KNOWN answer, the poster usually gets yelled at for not searching. Sometimes you can't win.

Thanks for all the input guys...I appreciate it... Along the lines of what some of you thought, I checked the rims and it turns out that one of the balancing weights came off some how...road side is taking to a dealership tomorrow for them to balance them out again...Lastly, JRL, maybe you woke up on the wrong side of the bed today so ill give you the benifit of the doubt but next time if you having nothing to say maybe you should try just not saying anything at all...one of the reasons that this forum is IMO better than the rest is because people are friendly and helpful and there is an overall low representation of the "high and mighty" people...no need to be a jerk, I was only looking for some thoughts on the problem not a complete diagnostic test...alcohol and women, or a combination of both usually help me when im having a bad day...you might want to try that

I'm always this way
Why do you think that someone here should have a miracle answer for you?
WE CAN'T SEE THE CAR FROM THE MONITER.
All of the above answers are possible but wild guesses but it's plainly obvious that you should look at the offending wheel and tire instead of asking us, who from here, cannot do anything and I would bet the farm that you (or someone) will find the answer
Obviously something happened on the way home, perhaps you hit a pothole, maybe you didn't even realize it?
Who knows, but you get to that wheel and tire and you WILL find out

It could be the muffler bearings. While your at it, check the turn signal fluid for any leaks. These are known problems.
Conrad - The 3rd String Armchair Quarterback

That's not quite accurate anymore. With Volvo's old mechanical system you did have to be very concerned about swapping out one tire. With the latest Volvo-Haldex setups Haldex says you are fine as long as the tires are within 5/32". When your tires are seriously out of whack the Haldex system will simply shut down with NO adverse mechanical effects (aside from the fact that you'll have a FWD car of course.)

Quote, originally posted by JRL »

Why are you asking US?
YOU have the car and YOU know exactly what's going on.
