More of a tap. I didn't see it happen but a friend of mine did. Some old guy was backing out of his parking spot in his Town Car and bumped my car just under the driver's side headlight wiper. The slightest little nick is there that I think I may be able to buff out. The thing that really bothered me was that when I stopped the guy to let him know he hit my car his wife proceeds to jump out of the car and start to tell me he didn't hit it. She's ttrying to tell me, in the comfort of her barka-lounger passenger seat, that their boat of a car never hit me even though i had two witnesses say otherwise. I hate ignorant people like that.
I did get the guys plate number incase it turned out to be more than a bump, but so far everything seems to be OK.

Re: Car hit today (Cementups)

I would have been only a little shaken until the lady jumped out, at which point I would have called the cops and MADE them wait. If they didn't I would have filed a hit and run complaint.

At least the one I worked with did.

It's worth the trip to the far and empty end of the parking lot... Besides you see lots of nice cars out there, the other day at Lowes I saw a huge-finned old cadillac, with a FIN sticker on the rear window.

Funny thing is that whenever i park way the heck in BFE in a parking lot when I come back out there is always a cluster of nice, clean cars parked around mine.

Yes We cops love photos but witnesses more...At least you were able to get a hold of the person who hit the car...even if they denied it. Hit & runs without notes is my personal pet peeve...goes to a theory I have of a crumbling fabric of humanity. I should get my car back from the shop tomorrow. Ironic is that the officer who wrote my report for my accident put my plate down as the suspect vehicle...Had that corrected today. Just goes to show you even when you are the man behind the badge you still get *ucked by the man

Re: (Johnnylaws60r)

My R was hit while parked back in March in NYC ... as I was getting out of the car.
I had just parked and several spots in front of me were totally empty as the street sweeper had just passed. This man swoops in front of my car (about 10 feet away) and reversed full speed into my front end. It was such a horrible noise!!! He was driving a newer Explorer with a tow hitch, so I was amazed to see only minor damage (small chip in bumper, cracked and scratched grill and bent license plate).
After confronting him about hitting the car , the guy says "Welcome to New York", and refused to give me his insurance info, saying there was no damage. I ended up calling the police and forced him to wait there. The police came to the scene and refused to write a report - saying the damage wasn't $1000, but the police even said it was clear he hit and damaged my car. I also have 2 witnesses, my passenger (who was also getting out of the car) and her mother who was standing on the street.
The police had us exchange info on official NYPD forms... so I think I'm safe. Fast forward to last week - I get a letter from this jerk-off's insurance company saying they are not covering the damage because their driver says HE NEVER EVEN HIT MY CAR!!!! WHAT!???? I have witnesses (who apparently mean nothing to an insurance company if they are not on a police report). There is damage to my car (but they say there is no red paint on the Explorer). Basically they say it is his word against mine... and they believe him.
I am so angry and frustrated that I haven't even thought about what to do next.

Johnny, or anyone else who might know, is this true? Do the police not have to file a report if there is less than $1000 in damage? How the heck does that officer know how much it's going to cost to repair, or what hidden damage there is? Had the police filed a report, I bet the insurance company would have no choice but to pay.
Dude, that sucks. Hope you get it covered - maybe it's time to get a lawyer-friend involved (know any?).
Re: (adalcanto)

In retrospect I should have demanded that a report be filed. But I had just gotten off a red-eye flight and I was exhausted and not really too worried. The cops were on the scene and they said it was "pretty cut and dry - he hit your car"... Just goes to show you, you have to protect yourself at all times.
I do have a lawyer friend who I haven't spoken to yet. But I did just speak to an insurance friend who advised me to file an "internal appeal" with the insurance company. She also said I could file a claim with my ins co and let them fight it out. I also filed a "mail-in" police report and will try to track down the officers who came to the scene through the NYPD's radio dispatch unit as recommended by the nice officer at the East Village precinct.
The funniest part - I just got an estimate written.... for $998.07 - I chuckled when I saw the estimate.
It's funny that after writing about it I am all fired up now - and ready to call Judge Judy.

For a while it seemed like most of the reports of accidents were guys who were pushing it and got unlucky (or perhaps driving irresponsibly )--basically some human factor of the R owner was somehow involved. But then there are all these sort of events in the parking lot which leave me baffled. It probably is no more often than any other car, but sometimes I gotta wonder.

Re: (adalcanto)

In Portland, the police are WORTHLESS as any kind of ally or investigative source for any kind of motor vehicle incident only involving property damage. Basically, someone has to be seriously injured before they'll give any accident the time of day.
My wife was edging out of our driveway in her Yukon to see up the road. Tires were short of edge of pavement but bumper hanging over it. Guy on a sport bike going FAST sees her, skids about 60' (by marks), dumps bike which slides 50' into front bumper of Yukon hard enough to bend front end of frame rails over, he goes cart-wheeling down the road in his full leathers and helmet.
Turns out, thank the lord, he is only "shaken up" per EMT's; bike totalled; $1000 damage to Yukon. Officer "visited" the scene, basically said, "you folks are on your own." Confided to my wife it looked like the biker was going "way too fast considering that this is on a gentle curve and you have a 'blind' driveway problem all along here." (posted 40 mph but the Kawasakis can hit 5th gear w.o.t. before shutting down for the next curve).
Biker subsequently claimed he "had no option but to throw down because she was pulling out in front of me." My ins. co. rolled over for that and bought him a new bike even though I objected strongly! Oregon is a comparative negligence state but my ins. said: "well we have no evidence that excessive speed was involved at all and without a police report, you're not going to convince us."
I know, I'm lucky he didn't bust his *ss, but nobody ever "pulled out", as was very clear at the scene, and if he hadn't thrown his bike down, he'd have ridden right by her front end--she wasn't moving when he saw her. So much for the police in an Oregon mva--don't have one here.
